Did that one a while ago Rabid, very good book. Finished Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency awhile ago, haven't decided what I was gonna read next. Stupid White Men from Micheal Moore was pretty good if you like getting pissed off when reading, but then again you dont know whats really true or not.

Chaos is a great book, but out of date. Read "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene.

Anything Douglas Adams is great! (H.H.G.G. out on April 29th!)

Currently reading trade manuals for work.

Stephen Pile - The Book of Heroic Failures
THE WORST BROADCAST

Few broadcasters have given more unalloyed pleasure than Lt. Commander Tommy Woodroofe. He leapt to public prominence with his now-famous commentary on the illumination of the fleet at Spithead in 1937.

Before the broadcast the Commander had joined in the celebrations with slightly too much enthusiasm. The result was an exquisitely incoherent talk punctuated by pauses of anything up to eleven seconds.

"At the present moment", he began, "the whole fleet is lit up. When I say 'lit up' I mean lit up by fairy lamps. It's fantastic. It isn't a fleet at all. It's just... it's fairy-land. The whole fleet is in fairyland. Now if you'll follow me through... if you don't mind... the next few moments you'll find the fleet doing odd things."

There then followed a lengthy pause. "I'm sorry I was telling some people to shut up talking", the commander explained delightfully.

At this point all lights on the fleet were turned out so that rockets could be fired. The commander's reaction was: "It's gone. It's gone. There's no fleet. It's... it's disappeared. No magician who ever could have waved his wand could have waved it with more acumen than he has now at the present moment. The fleet's gone. It's disappeared."

"I was talking to you in the middle of this damn... <cough> in the middle of this fleet and what's happened is the fleet's gone and disappeared and gone."

At this point Woodroofe was faded out; an announcer said: "That is the end of the Spithead commentary" and dance music came on.

Commander Woodroofe said afterwards that he had been 'overcome by emotion'.

Last book I finished - 'The Last Contract'

Just a few days ago I was strugling to finish 'Blue Mars', but that book is absolutely boring!

Now I read 'The Manhatton Project'

My favourite is 'Battlefield Earth', especially the third book.

Was that about string theory? I saw the television documentry of it, if it is, but if it isn't then i didn't. So I did.

'The Zombie Survival Guide' - Max Brookes. I started reading this a good while ago, but stopped half way through it. Its written as a serious handbook on what to do if the world is taken over by zombies. It doesn't make the most thrilling read, since its a step by step guide, and more of a novelty item than a comedy book.

Other books I haven't read through fully; 'A Catcher in the Rye' and 'Dave Gorman's Googlewhack adventure' (which I was really enjoying, dunno why the hell I stopped).

I have read about a dozen Steven King books and he is one of my favorite authors. Right now I'm reading a book of short stories by some guy named Lovecraft. I'm not sure but I think he did most of his work in the early 1900s. Many people think that he one of the top horror writers ever. I am also reading Calculus for dummies.

The Da vinci code is a great book. I do have the Elegant universe and I will probably read that next. I would like to read the Grapes of Wrath but im not sure I have the patience for it.
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-30 19:23:55 UTC Post #100240
Yeah, I've heard H.P. Lovecraft is really good as well.

Trying for the 5th time to get throught 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' By John Le Carre. I always get stuck by around page 150, realizing I've lost sense of who the characters are and where they're going... :(

The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro- slightly surreal story of a brilliant but thoroughly incompetent pianist.
A short history of chinese philosophy by Fung Yu-Lan.
The Silent Takeover: global capitalism and the death of democracy by Noreena Hertz. This is ok so far, nothing special. At the moment mostly number-crunching, I'm interested to see her solutions to the inequity of our economic system.

Bought 'Bill Hicks: Agent of evolution' yesterday. I'm not normally a biography fan, but Hicks' life is worth reading about, an brilliant man, and hilariously funny to boot. I'd recommend it to Jahzzy Jehff, or any closet Hicks fans out there. I can hardly put it down.
