when i placed ambient_generic in a map it didn't work. so i went back and read the tutorial. and it says that the .wav file i want to play has to be in the valve/sound/ambience folder. but theres no sound folder inside my valve folder : so i made one ( a sound/ambience inside the valve folder.), but that didnt work either...any ideas?

Is the path written correctly? ambience/yoursound.wav (without the valve/sound/)

Is it set to "Start on"?

Or just "ambience/<filename>.wav". Hammer already knows to look in the sound folder, right?

True.
The same goes for models and sprites, like:

models/table.mdl (Half-Life/valve/models/table.mdl)
sprites/teleport.spr (Half-Life/valve/sprites/teleport.spr)

Nothing more to add.
I also had this problem with my early maps. :)
The path you need to write is the path within the 'sound' folder (sound/amnience/something/sound.wav = ambience/something/sound.wav)

using the 'browse' feature of hammer adds the entire path

I:/games/won-hl/valve/sounds/ambience/mysound.wav

All you need is

ambience/mysound.wav

(said previously, but not very clearly)

A very common problem is that people often are confused when it comes to the flag- 'is not toggled'
If you tick the flag the sound wont be looped if you don't then it will be. Hence in older FGDs it was called 'is not looped'.
Maybe the ambient Generic does play but when you get to it's area it have already stopped playing.

For the lazy ones that don't want to read the whole post, let me summerize it-

Is not toggled=Is not looped

ive tryed it with the toggle box checked, is there any way something mite be interfering like a leak or something?

If there is a leak you should know about it when you read your compile log. ;) Leaks wont have anything to do with this.
