Quick question:
How do the judges feel about (small) snippets of commercial music being used?

How do the judges feel about custom textures from nightwatch wad and custom models from svencoop?

JeffMod: Take http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use into consideration. Use it if you think it's necessary. If you include one, keep it excessively small and cite the music in your readme. Also, the more obscure the better.

Skals: Probably not Nightwatch; I think we've run into some complainers in the past over that. I'm sure svencoop is fine though, because most every mapper for that uses other people's models/textures in the first place.

There are plenty of model places around (or at least there used to be) if you can find them.

Um, but nightwatch textures were released into the public by the guy working on the nightwatch project, Shouldn't I be able to just put his name in the credits and use them in my entry?
Skals SkalsLevel Designer

If he publicly released them, then sure. Just credit him, yeah. I guess night watch did die didn't it?

Yeah pretty much. I'd rather not give up on the textures since i've already spent days mapping with them.

Cool now I have them too. Muahahaha! Yea it says in a readme with it that you can use them for non commercial purposes if you give credit.

Looks like I'll have to find something to replace my sound...
Hmm... I wonder what I could make if I put together some of the stock source sounds...

I dreamed a gargantua was in my closet, so just map a bed room, closet door opens, gargantua inside, he cooks the player, and there's my compo entry.
Posted 14 years ago2010-07-07 18:53:47 UTC Post #282794
And the Gargantua fits... how?

Posted 14 years ago2010-07-07 21:10:21 UTC Post #282797
err, that's the problem I'm having now. I can't seem to fit the gargantua into the closet in the map.

Make a bigger closet?

My entry is at a standstill at the moment- I'm hoping to work on it today, but that may not happen.
Pictures whenever the map seems good enough for them.

Use a tiny gargantua, 2much. You can call it a notsogargantua.
Posted 14 years ago2010-07-08 11:10:30 UTC Post #282807
Or have a walk-in closet containing a magic gargantua (monster_gargantua) that summons fireflies with the power of it's mind.

That doesn't sound very creative or effortful.
Posted 14 years ago2010-07-11 09:49:22 UTC Post #282920
Now, does this have to be perfect, like, instead of having a zombie climb over something, because there no animation for that, can i have him just kinda walk through the object? its not visually good, but its still a vital part of game play.

I'm not saying it's not, I'm just saying instead of rescaling the gargantua model, he could just make a walk-in closet and put a normal garg in there, with the yellow blobs.
It's a dream, no logic required.

This is a competition, not a group project. It doesn't have to be the best but if it isn't than it simply won't win. Winning or atleast placing is what you should generally shoot for.

I'm going to try to at least place.

I already know I'm not going to win.

If you can mask it, or change it in some way that it makes sense, sure.

I'd prefer its looks not be totally oblivious if possible though; part of the judging is based on how well you cope with the limitations the engines.

I'm not saying that you cant do it, but if it gives off a fake 'hacked in' vibe it probably wont fare as well as it could've.

you could make the zombie start on the higher part and make him do the falling animation when falling off of it.

like in i think it was office complex

Lol that would be pretty funny. But focus on one lol, well I guess you could do one for each engine pertaining to there limitations but than it wouldn't push you to do more with gold and it would permote you to do less with source.

Edit: yes a few beers did influence this post :plastered:

Do you all know why I will very slowly start the work on my compo?
Because after I finish it I'm really in the mood of getting a review for it. But I have no expectations until Christmas really =)).
So yeah, will probably post my map near the finish.

Is it ok if I use some models I didn't make in my entry. There are quite a few plant and tree models and some prop models that don't contribute majorly to the value of my entry but help with some basic things. And the tree and plant models i'm using are used by everyone. I just remember rim being disqualified for his use of the zelda models so I wanted to make sure I could use these models.
Posted 14 years ago2010-07-18 00:13:50 UTC Post #283141
His were supposedly ripped from Zelda, so you're fine. Just make sure its not 'stolen' from another game. (a game that's being sold for money, that is)

And be sure to credit whoever made them.

Posted 14 years ago2010-07-18 03:55:57 UTC Post #283143
Alright sounds good though it will be very hard to credit some of them though I will try.

Edit: Its really boggling me how much gold can handle in one map. I just keep adding more and more.

I'd like to ask this to the judges:

Will our maps be judged only based on their "dreamyness" or will they receive overall reviews, giving us scores on things like brushwork, lighting, ambience as well as the "dreamyness".
