As you can see it is a continuous block, why does the compiler chop it up and apply the wrong texture ?

That's how GoldSource does random textures. If you don't want it to do that, just change the name of the texture; removing the -0~ or whatever tag.

It's the
-
symbol (dash) that indicates a random tiling texture.
You can use Wally to make a duplicate then remove the dash from the texture name.
