I have been away from home for the past week, and today I got back. Started the PC, and when I opened steam my antivirus reported there was a virus in the Steam directory. It moved it to the chest, so next time Steam updated it. Again, the antivirus reported the file as a virus.

This didn't happen before. Do you have any idea what's this about?

After a quick google, apparently it's just a false positive on avast's behalf.

Also, stop using avast, its retarded. Go pro -> Kaspersky

That AV knows whats its doing when it detects false positives. Plus when you know its a false positive you can easily ignore the threat.

I was going to say "I know what the problem is. You're using shit anti-virus software." but Stojke beat me to it so I won't say that.

From what I've heard, Microsoft Security Essentials is a very good anti-virus software, and is one of the few things Microsoft actually did well.

dude, there has to be like 3 million trojans on your computer, seriously. Even if you are not downloading nintendo roms or copius amounts of porn, you are still wide open to attack from basically any website.

do you use a script blocker on your browser at least or use malwarebytes or anything?

I've been using avast for years now without a problem. Seems like an update to avast fixed this.

actually yes, using norton antivirus definitely makes you an idiot, and i'm afraid i'll need to deduct 15 urby respect points, PLUS, dock you 5 ironical points for mocking someone for not using any Norton Product =}

Avast was actually rated superior to MSE for detection and false positives the last time i checked, so it's good enough for my stuff. (i also backup/image my entire setup monthly, so if i got a comp killer i wouldn't be shit-outta-luck)

P.S., yer mum is a harsh reflection, hah BAM!(inb4 ZING) :P

Currently sticking with MSE for the time being. I had my doubts what with it being MS but I'm actually pretty happy with it. I've also got MalwareBytes and AVG available in case I feel like double checking anything :P

There's nothing wrong with Norton these days. It had a spell of being terrible back in the W2000, XPSP1 days, but it scores very well in comparison tests now.

Anti-virus software is something I will never understand peoples' elitism about.
Archie ArchieGoodbye Moonmen
Posted 12 years ago2012-07-27 14:26:53 UTC Post #308483
It's not elitism it's pragmatism.

1. why would anyone pay a yearly subscription for a product you can get for free, that does the same thing.

2. it's shitware that is hard to remove once you install it

3. you may be right, norton might be the best product on the market for all i know now, but i would still never use it for retaliation for past sins ;)

I'll take that as an insult and tell you that there's a high possibility you don't actually know what you're talking about.

This wasn't a thread in which we flame each other about what antivirus software is the best- these discussions are like politics if one does not refrain from subjectivity.

Haha. Yeah, spot on. I was at work, bored and felt like being a cock. :P

I apologise.

I could care less for what AV programs are rated highly etc. As long as the one I use keeps the nasties away (which it has done to date) who honestly gives a fuck?

This made me remember that I used to confuse "England" with "UK". Just looked again on the map: I wonder how children learn at geography all those districts: it's a mess.
I also discovered by chance the district of Falkirk. Instantly remembered AoE2 :).

So, this thread went from helping someone with a problem about the game related Steam software conflicting with his anti-virus, to shouting about what anti-virus is 'best' because no can accept the principles of 'opinion', to mocking the English? All in all, isn't this thread now off-topic?

It's nice to read a thread and suddenly find you're being attacked, all rather racially... without even posting yet.

This is always bound to happen from time to time.

We need a thread that explains how does an AV actually work. Than people will get it more rationally than just shouting cool names.

I use avast, malwarebytes, and super antispyware. Oddly enough between the 3 of them, i've had no problems and each one picks up a different array of stuff.

i settled on those because i was tired of hearing the high opinions of which ones are best. its almost as bad as talking about politics.

Its far from that, it simply compares the bits in the file with a long ass list of stupid shit that are identifiers for viruses. It searched for strings of data.

That's because it's so bad it's not even worth mentioning. I used it a few years ago, and it was basically a virus itself. Never picked up a Trojan we did have (My brother had to manually sweep the computer using safe mode and a DOS prompt to find it's location and squash the damn thing.) and it took up a crapton of system resources. Paying for McAfee is basically buying a virus, excepting the handy shredder tool.
