Remake an original hl1 death match level.

This had been suggested before. I would SO be on board for this.

Would it have to be for HL1DM, or could it be done for other games?

The number of HL1 deathmatch levels is pretty limited, how about "any map from any game released before 2000"?

That's a good idea. I thought it would spark much interest with the select maps though. But that allows for tons of more options.

I've got at least three four recreations from various games at various levels of completion lying around that I can think of. While they're mostly carbon copying and wouldn't do for this, I think one of them might serve well for remixing...

And after a quick investigation of what games Urby might have been referring to, I kinda hope he and I aren't thinking of the same level, because I'm pretty sure we're speaking of the same game.

I'm personally all about Strider's idea in the comments of Urby's map.
Does this strike anyone else as a good idea for a mini-compo? As in, someone builds a little series of super basic rooms, each with a distinct idea, and people have to re-imagine the map while maintaining those ideas, maybe tying them all together with a unique theme? So long as you enter the room and go "oh this is the flooded room" or "this is the office area", I imagine it could be pretty open to interpretation and varied world themes.

To be honest, i'm just looking for a good excuse to somewhat force me to remake bounce or another equivalent; something I've wanted to do for some time.

That, or others like Crossfire, Subtransit or even something I've done before but could do better i.e. Stalkyard.

Archie, that idea of Urby's reminds me of some of NIPPER's maps where each area/room has different music reflecting the atmosphere visually represented by it. For example, techno music is played in a dark room with red lasers, happy music is played in a colorful room with grass and moving blinking light boxes and cloudy hallways have tranquil music.

Pre-2000 leaves you with a lot of classic maps to choose from, I like the sound of that.
I'm personally all about Strider's idea in the comments of Urby's map.
I think it might work better as a community project. We could tie it all together in a mini-mod like TWHL Tower, and throw in some story about Gordon leaping through alternate universes or whatever. Maybe after people have had some downtime when TWHL Tower is finished?

What's the ruling on what constitutes a remake? Do you have to remain faithful to the theme, the layout, the key elements or some combination thereof?

I'm just wondering how free we are there, because what I have in mind may work well abstractified a bit.

I don't think there should be any rules, for example if you want to remake bounce which I would most likely be doing, as long as there's bounce pads of some sort it should work. It would be up to the judges to determine the winners.

I'm not sure about <2000 as there's an absolute shitload to work with and allows a lot of doubt as to wether the new map is that similar to the original...

random idea I had is what about an assault course or race map, that being you are either challenged to get from one place to another ( wether this be just generic shooting, agility, puzzles or something) or a race in which combines that with a time limit or something chasing after you as well. Something really a bit different

make a single player speed run map.
standard half-life 1 gameplay but time is against you and if you do not complete your objectives in time you DIE :pwned:
Like... power the backup generator so the teleport can send you to somewhere but the marines launched a missile at the base and it'll be there in 5 minutes.

Seconded, this would be a lot of fun! :)

Why not just call it Hazard Course contest and be done with it? Bonus points to entries that include some sort of timer to mark player's score.

Urby's map makes me think a Then & Now compo might be fun?

Take one of your old maps, and rebuild/resubmit to the mapvault. To qualify, you must already have a map in the vault to rebuild.

I really liked Myles's and Instant's ideas too, but meh it's doubtful I'd have time to compete anyway. (I expected to be ball's deep in learning blender by now, but no time lately)

Remaking an game level from Before 2000 its an amazing idea.
That's the age of pioneering 3D games. There is so much you can see from various consoles and games.

That would be an awesome compo, yet a pretty hard one, because it will be a fine task to honour an old school level :)

Brett and I were chatting on skype on how fun it would be to remake/port classic arcade games to the goldsource and source engine. Would make for a very-fun compo as well..

Speaking of classic arcade games, if you are a fan definitely check out Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arade if you haven't already

I love all these ideas.
Re-makes are always fun because there's already a blue-print for you.
Fire theme is sweet because we already did a water themed level.
Speed run would be fun because I haven't seen a challenge like that yet.

So methinks we should call a vote - perhaps in a news post?

I prefer single player mapping as well but I don't really have any actual map maps in the vault. I've got a few example maps and minicompo maps, but none with any actual gameplay. I suppose if it looked like Now and Then was going to win I could do a rushed map and submit it ahead of time. :P

Step 1: Make a cube.
Step 2: Submit cube to the Vault.
Step 3: Wait for Then and Now.
Step 4: Pimp the shit out of that cube.

Seriously though, I really want the pre-2000 compo, like, ASAP. It would give me a legitimate excuse to finish one of those remakes I started. (Any advantage from already starting? Not much I start makes it past the first (untextured) room. I have many "maps" that can attest to this.)

Posted 9 years ago2015-04-24 15:57:45 UTC Post #325361
Two things.

1. Remake is split, because both remake HLDM and pre 2000 are remakes. I'd vote for either or so I think if they average more than "now and then" we should vote between pre 2000 and remake HLDM. Split vote=bad. Actually I voted for my theme "remake HLDM" but tried re-voting for "<2000" as it would include "remake HLDM". Couldn't re-vote so, Moaby can you subtract one vote from remake and add one to pre 2000 from zeeba? :) Thanks.

2. What on earth is Now and Then? (I suppose I could go back and find it but i'm too busy to read everything right now.) I agree with Urby that we could just make a remake SP style. So...

Edit: Reads Captain's post and learns what Now and Then means. :D This is a really cool idea, perhaps pre 2000 remake would include a map you've submitted over 15 years ago... Yea nevermind lol. But perhaps we could consolidate pre 2000 remake with now and then and per now and then would go back ~3 years and pre 2000 would go back 15...

To sum it up: The competition brief is "Remake". What you can remake is any level from any game ever made <2000, or a level you made yourself that dates back at least a few years. It would make sense to in the best way possible reference what you remake in your submittal. I'd include a video of the original or something to that nature. If it's for the same engine as your remake, you could include the original level in the submittal and have the player change level from the original to the remake if you chose to. Or just include the original map or whatever.

Then and Now might attract more votes if we allowed for any previous map and not just from the map vault? [/devil's advocate]

It's clear though Stojkens' pre-2K idea is the majority winner. Perhaps now a final poll to hammer out details?

Which would you prefer for: TWHL Compo #34 - Remake Something!?
1. ANYTHING, including your own work and real-world stuff.
2. Any of your old maps, map vault or no.
3. Any game level prior to the year 2K, inlcluding classic aracde games.
4. Any PC game level prior to 2K.
5. Any original HLDM/HLDM2 map.

I would choose #1 I guess since it opens things up to the most participants possible. #4 would be especially fun, just to see the PC games people would choose :)

Pengy suggested it (fourth post), not Stjojkejoek.
The number of HL1 deathmatch levels is pretty limited, how about "any map from any game released before 2000"?
Just so's proper attribution.

I think your suggestion there, CT, is breaching the realm of being too broad. IMO.

EDIT: Upon re-reading your post — or just plain reading it, apparently — I see I've misunderstood. I'd go #3. Plenty of scope, yet well-defined boundaries.
#1 is vastly too broad. #2 requires old work worth remaking, which not everyone might have. No point needlessly locking people out of a competition. #4 seems like #3 with an arbitrary, potentially detrimental restriction. #5 is the only other one of note, IMO. Relevant, enough scope to pick and choose within, without being too open.

^ Indeed you are right! It needs to read(and re-read) things more carefully, sorry!

It agrees that #1 is broadenizated too much; A make anything compo is probably not a good thing? :P

Golden-Age PC games seemed to consistently have more heart and creativity put into them, and it sets them apart imo. As technology improved and consoles began to rise, we lost some creativity/heart along the way.

#3 seems to include maps you've made since it says any game. if not, just make one that includes remakes of your own levels and pre 2000 game levels. Well actually I don't care because i'd probably just remake bounce.

Haha, reads back to my example fixing my vote, I accidently stole from "Now and then" instead of "HLDM" epic fail.

For the pre-2000 remake, does the level itself have to made before the year 2000, or just the game it is for?
