The only thing I see active on the site is the Map Vault and barely any other things. Things are inactive and especially the tutorials,

People have been saying this for almost a decade. TWHL isn't dead, it has just always been slow. Like a sloth. A beautiful, cuddly sloth.

I've been around at TWHL for more than twelve years now.

I think my son will soon become a member. He is going to be nine years old soon.

Ya this place is still alive... Possibly not as active than 10 years ago I'd imagine but still alive and kicking never the less.

I suppose I can agree regarding the tutorial section of the site but the Forum and map vault are still active and new things still get developed from time to time. I believe right now there are 2 major mods in development by dedicated twhl users with plenty of time at their disposal.

I'm hoping that shifting the tutorials to the wiki section in TWHL4 will let us add more tutorials.

Yep I'm still here, but I hardly ever post anything, I just usually check out what random threads I can comment redundant stuff on, like this

Goldsrc is 3 years from being 20 years old. It makes sense that most people have moved on to more modern engines, so it's expected that you will find less activity here.
What you have left here are the die-hards and the people who are specifically interested in Goldsrc. Those numbers are few but far from "dead". TWHL is and has always been a tightly knit community, and we'd be honored to have you join us if you are interested in sticking around.

...but TWHL is not centered around Goldsrc. It's centered around Valve's engines, which include Source and Source2 as well as Goldsrc. At least that's how I see it.

Well, talking about the Goldsource community in general, I'd wager it will still last plenty of decades: There are still die-hard fans of the Amiga, so we do have a margin! Moreover, I think that game's technologies have less and less room for improvement for 2 or 3 years, so people sticking with Goldsource now will not have a reason to leave it in the upcoming years.

As long as there are people still modding Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, people will be modding for Goldsource engine.

I for one am still a massive user of the engine and there are plenty of communities across the net that feel the same. I think it will be a VERY long time before Goldsource modding is completely phased out.

Goldsource is the basis from Counter-Strike (1.500.000 simultaneusly players on january of 2014, prbably more this year) and mods like Earth Special Forces, or Arrangement mod, or Paranoia came from... So as long the HL engine and the SDK remains as malleable as it is, HL modding will be alive, and so TWHL will. ;)

Is there any other game that is as "mod friendly" as Half-Life 1 & 2?
Don't think so. Lets be honest, now days people only create GoldSrc mods because they do not require much effort. VHE is an AMAZING tool that is easy too learn and you can make awesome mod only with it, add some new models, sounds, textures and you will get entirely new game. Not sure if there is any other awesome game like this. Half-Life 2 is 12 years old now, but engine is so good, that if you make a mod today it will not look outdated. CS:GO is made on modified Source engine and it is insanely popular. There are still people who play and make original Doom mods, so I don't see why this community could die. Unless there could be another developers hub somewhere.

I think sites like Moddb and RTSL give more life to TWHL.
Those are both sites that get lots of attention but they don't necessarily teach you how to develop new content.

People always need resources.

TWHL is easily comparable to the community of Far Cry 1.

They are there (like me), talking (like me), but rarely even make content anymore (except me, for FC, of course) (which I can't exclusively say for all the content on TWHL, probably the tutorials).

Really glad to see activity here after all this time :)
I've recently started mapping again after Sven-coop got released to Steam (woot!) and I'm looking to release a map here soon!

I've also released an unfinished HL2DM map here years ago and I'd finish it now if I thought folks still played HL2DM.... does anyone?

I'm constantly directing new members to this place. After releasing HRAFD, and the release of Military Duty and Arctic Incident, all that got a few folks interested in Goldsource again. I usually have folks come to me for help, and that inevitably means, they end up coming to all of YOU! Bwahaha. Great power, great responsibility, dig it?
