Yes..
I have been getting a lot of mail about the quality of maps in the Map Vault.
Before you drive yourselves to distraction you might want to consider the reason behind the Vault:

It was an idea that Atom launched to showcase members maps, provide an area where problems could be solved and comment could be made.

So why bitch about the Quality / Quantity?
If it was quality you wanted, then it would have been set up differently.
That would have required a team of adjudicators who determined wether maps were "Fit" to be entered into the Vault.
Some of you have had recent experience with having your Prized maps, torn to pieces by others.... :)
Not pleasant, is it?

This is not something we wanted at TWHL.

While I agree that some of the entries should be moved to Unfinished Maps...I don't believe that ANY should be deleted.
With the exception of those that 404 error

The Vault is a place for everyone to upload their creations, that includes new members, old members and those who for reasons only know to themselves still believe that they can actually map.

So Drop the subject.
Slay, Seventh and I will keep an eye on the entries and move them if need be.

Just remember some of the maps you uploaded when you got here... I bet you removed them?

Just to say that I wholeheartedly agree. While perhaps it'd be nice if people sought advice on the forums before releasing some of these works, people's maps do need playtesting before they learn about some aspects of mapping.

Also, I'm now pretty sure that all the CS maps are marked with the little green icon. Let me know if there are any I missed.

I guess we'll have to take it as a fact of life that these things happen...

It just irritated me that someone brought out maps that, in my opinion, never should have been put public as being finished.
Maybe I should recall the days when I was a n00b too...

I move for a new vault - into which maps will only be placed after a review ;)

This way, if you're looking for a good map to play - any mod, you can find some good quality work there.

It would also be a good idea to give some sort of recognition to the mapper for maps in this vault.

The rating will be decided on by the reviewer, so no asshat votes bumping votes up or down.

What do you all think? Is it worth pestering Atom about it?
Posted 20 years ago2004-05-24 06:03:23 UTC Post #28465
I think its a good idea, worth some consideration, however who would rate the maps? The moderators? Surely there would be an influx of maps waiting to be reviewed. You would need a few more people to help (me looks up helpfully ;) ). I would also suggest orgainising the Vault into more sections than it has now as has been mentioned in other forums
(i.e. Sections for Half-Life SP, Half-Life MP, Opposing Force, etc)

Big thumbs up, have thought the same myself.

Better classification would be good, too. Advanced search, by mods, with ticks, so people can exclude all the CS maps :)

So, instead of only a Finished maps section, also a Recommended maps section? Sounds great!
Posted 20 years ago2004-05-24 14:46:28 UTC Post #28512
there should be a limit to the maps uploadable at one time. for instance 2 maps a day. also beginner intermediate and advanced vaults. im just annoyed i rleeased a map less than a week ago and lready its been pushed to the bottom of the 1st page.

I thought this too :) so it must be a good idea, eh?

I really like the Review Idea.

But I don't want to contemplate the amount of utter rubbish that I will have to sift through to find the Gem....

Leave me out of this one.
It is a huge amount of work I cannot commit to.

I also like the 1 a day...or 1 a week rule.

Seventh, the little green CS thing is on most of the CS maps, but I have a habit of uploading a screenie and forgetting that the edit defaults to HL, and CS must be selected on an edit change, so there might be a few out there that are labled incorrectly..

Hey, wasn't someone reviewing Mod's, HL personalities at the begining of the year??
Posted 20 years ago2004-05-25 01:38:11 UTC Post #28577
I'm not sure about one/week, but I thought just one per day. Perhaps the Example Maps section should be excluded (don't want to have a day I make a few example maps for forum posts and not be able to upload them) but the amount of maps some people're submitting is absurd.

Well I suppose the mods could have a slightly raised allowance due to their moderating responsibilities, and also have the power to up the limit on users who need to submit more than one map for some reason.

was the review someone me
:o

Oh wait - it was, i was supposed to do SlayerA's mod, and then the Project started - Ohnos!

I'll be glad to have a look through some maps every weekend - i'd enjoy it :)

But i was thinking of a "Maps Of Distinction" Vault - anyway, the name doesen't matter...

there is only one problem. where is atom
Posted 20 years ago2004-05-25 12:52:39 UTC Post #28633
I'm wondering if the maps I have been posting are part of the "unnecessary" postings. I've been trying to pretty much just seek advice for problems maps. :

Yes, the timing for this compo was, well, very bad...

Still, I hope to get it finished before the deadline... there's actually a change of entering the compo AND getting my diploma... :)
Posted 20 years ago2004-05-25 20:12:51 UTC Post #28701
Getting your Diploma is more important than the compo's.
Trust me on that one...
there will be more compo's...
but you might not get another chance at a Diploma.

There are two entries now, so Vassy is coming second. ;)

I've been browsing through the map vault again, looking for something interesting. There are tons of multiplayer maps and playing them alone is boring, single player maps are rare and hard to find.
So why not add an extra map type, like HL-MP and HL-SP to make it easier to find single player stuff. A little program could unzip the file and search for multiplayer start ents, if there is none it's definitely a singleplayer map - might also be used for CS and TFC maps. So those annoying "I made a map cs_whatthenot and submitted it as a HL map" mistakes won't happen again.

Moved here by Seventh. I think it shows how much of an issue it is that this thread has stayed on-topic for so long.

I like the new vault idea for reviewed maps. And the 1 a day rule. But it shouldnt be applied to problem or example vaults.
m0p m0pIllogical.

I like the idea too, and im very willing to review maps.
Posted 20 years ago2004-05-26 13:24:08 UTC Post #28773
I was thinking of people who could write up full reviews of maps - like Ten Four.

Excellant idea, but like I mentioned earlier, you would a few more people to do the task.

What.. decide on the Topic? ;)
Or how it got off topic?

Anyway, there were only 5 entries for the Talking Sci compo, so it might well be the last.
Unless we have build a box compo?
Nah...
They still won't enter.

5 entries only!?!

What the...

and I thought I couldn't finish it because of my exams...

I am stunned... I had suspected more opposition (entries)...

Well I would certainly enter a new competition, not to mention judge it if there won't be any more otherwise. I know my partner for Cause of Death wanted to enter another, too, and I'm sure I could get a loada people to. Just need to think of a really flexible appealing topic.
