every time i try to compile a map Hammer locks up

Are you sure it 'locks up'? have you tried just letting it go?
Try compiling without RAD and VIS as these take time.

uhh....no lol

anyway it takes REALLY long or locked up when it trys to execute vis.exe

It takes really long.

Not responding always occurs for some reason - XP/2k think its frozen when it's not. If it takes days, then somethings wrong.

Get Zoner's Tools from the Links page to replace your old tools. Compiling can still take a very long time (literally days with a badly-made map on a not-too-great PC).

If you run a batch compiler, you will see that it has not frozen, but is still working as the percent bars will move. But in hammer, if locks up the compile window for some reason. Anyway, people who use Hammer to compile are either noobs, idiots or the uninformed.

It always acts slow when compiling, its just one of the many annoyances mappers face.
