I know this question doesn't directly relate to Half-Life or mapping, but Half-Life and CS look like crap without it. I just installed Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 and when I start CS it says that it doesn't support the video mode and will switch to software mode. I sent an e-mail off to reg@glsetup.com and I think that they might help me, but I am still open to suggestions. I still have the video driver that I was using before, I think, but maybe not for the graphics card. Also, I can't read from the Half-Life CD, but I can from other CDs like Quake 3. TIA

It might just be SP2 - it's said to cause loads of issues and conflicts with various software products.

Works fine for me - update your graphics card drivers.

Just stick with SP1, or use Windows 2000. Almost everyone I know who has SP2 hates it.

SP2 adds some features to the builtin (and crappy imo) firewall. Adds popup blocker to IE. Updates alot of DLL's with newer versions. One annoying feature is that you cant disable the firewall which ruins most online games. It also decreases performance on each application on first run since SP2 installation as it copies them to the prefetch list. But the performance is better after the first run. Still, get rid of it. It's annoying, pathetic etc. You might as well just install the "security" updates manually.
