how do i acces the drop down menu called "useable objects" all i have atm is...

I have them so I think they are in prefabs... not HL2 prefabs, perhaps your mapping for CSS? I tried it on HL2DM and saw the prefabs list work...

You are using Hammer 4.0 right?
Well open the SDK and choose HL2DM to map for...
Then try it out!

could you give me an idea of the setup directories for HL2DM then, coz im new to SDK

Ok well instead of HL2DM choose HL2...
SDK automatically sets up the different mapping modes for each game.
If you map for a mod thats exactly the same as HL2 then thats fine but if it uses a new .fgd then you have to manually set it up.

Tell me the name of the mod?
Try out mapping for HL2 in the SDK selection screen first...Tell me if that works.
Currently your mapping for a mod that does not use HL2 prefabs...
Besides why use prefabs :P You should make it yourself ;)

erm, changing what im mapping for didnt work, i cant find any prefabs, ive been through cs:s, hl2, hl2dm, and my mod (HOSTILE STRIKE)-needs a better name :P

(im only new to SDK so im practicing with prefabs...)

You dont mean props by any chance do you? I wouldnt worry to much about the prefabs its much more useful to work the thing out for yourself.

Prefabs are obsolete. You can make your own, but teh useable objects, etc, are gone. Props, as blackravent said, are the replacement.

Quite a bit actually =]

Prefabs can be entire map sections, areas that you utilize multiple times - Easier to make it once than reinvent the wheel.

Props are higher-detail than most brush-based things you can make, and can subsequently be included in prefabs.
