huge portal leafs and huge VIS compile times.
It's very similar to applying cordon bounds around the whole map and compiling.

Map carefully. That's the best advice I can give, because if you do, you won't have leaks. Simple.

its just like skyboxing pretty much, don't do it.
find and seal the leak.

It'll have a greatly detrimental performance on your players' performance, if not the server, probably screw up the lighting, and take forever to compile.
Don't do it.

Like Ant said map carefully... Making a huge box around your map is a very bad idea..
