Well, the best way to go when trying to learn a new musical instrument, is to have a personal tutor teach you. Now, one thing I learned from experience is that many professional grade music instrument dealers often offer free or very low priced classes on the various music instruments they sell. They do this to entice people to buy their instruments. There are also a whole bunch of tutor DVDs, books and interactive CD-Roms on the subject of guitar lessons.

Teaching myself guitar was the only way to go. If I had taken lessons, I would have never played guitar.

That stems from me hating anything that's forced, or expected of me.

All the things that I enjoy doing now, I taught myself. Like mapping.

Basically, if you don't mind getting taught, then go for lessons, but if you don't, then stick to doing it on your own, maybe following some of tito's advice.

I took lessons for 4 months. Basic picking techniques, chords, tunings, string stuff... how to hold / reposition for different playing styles and such.
Just dont give up!
Pick a song you like and keep trying until you can play it!

i taught myself. just keep at it, play simple songs that you enjoy.

Trapt is correct. Don't play what you don't enjoy. Start easy. If you like greenday, that's a good band to start off with.

I started with Metallica... not really simple, but damn, I love em.
