Swearing is just a waste of words, letters and/or effort. why say a FOUR letter word when you can say "ow."

We swear because there is extra emotion tied to these words. There is extra emotion tied to these words because humans are drawn to what is taboo. Victorian society and before were keen on separating the "common" people from the "high-class" people. Thus it became taboo for anyone to say the words like common people used (vulgar means common). and since everyone wants to be like the high-class folks, it sorta became a tradition not to use "vulgarities."

On an interesting side note, my grandmother has Alzheimer's and pretty much the only words she remembers are cuss words and little kid words.

The first words we learn in other languages are cuss words, and foreign exchange students always know how to curse in english really well.

I really don't think they SHOULD be kept separate. Everything, no matter what or who created it, works under the laws of physics. Science is not anti-religion, I don't think. and Religion doesn't have to be anti-science. Both are just 2 of the many facets of life that are intertwined.
With religion, there is lots of new stuff to find. Since your personal beliefs system is based on your interpretation of the texts. Your interpretation will change with your changes in maturity and your life experiences. I know it has for me. When i was a kid I thought that the big bang was fake and that t all just appeared. But now I think that there WAS a big bang and all that stuff. Nobody says God couldn't have caused it...

But you just said the truth when you say that "everything can be doubted." That is the same additude that was present when it was declared "the earth is round" and "you don't need a priest in order to get to heaven." ALL things in both science and religion can be doubted. So my point IS: what makes doubtable science so much better than doubtable religion? I don't decide where ANYONE is going. That's what you 'intellectual elites' don't seem to understand: Christians don't decide who goes where, God decided a long time ago that people who don't do what he says are going to hell, (not because they don't do what he says, but because doing what he says is the only way to atone for the crappy stuff we DID do...) Christians didn't SAY this, they just KNOW this because they read the bible.

That is why if a Christian s doing what they are supposed to do, they are not judging anyone. They are just aware of God's previous judgement and are concerned for others.

Sure it seems like some christians are judging everyone and telling everyone that they are going to hell, but they are not being very good christians and they are spoiling it for the rest of us who actually care about people instead of ourselves, and who want peace and not all kinds of "ZOMG UR GOING 2 HELLZ0R!" crap.

But you find that if you don't want to listen to a moral code, you just have to look at the imperfect people who try to follow it. If all it takes to disregard it all is just seeing someone else make mistakes doing it, then why do ANYTHING? It's all been done AND screwed up before YOU got here...

And I don't see how a lot of this stuff is a violation of church and state. The money says "In God We Trust." not "In the roman Catholic Church we trust because the US Gov't endorses it." Really, it says "God" not "Church." and it really never SAYS who "we" is.

The "ten commandments" that were up on the wall of that courthouse werenot the whole ten, i think. They left off the ones about coveting, idolatry and some others. I thought they only had the ones about killing, stealing, adultery, bearing false witness, etc. Which coincide with the laws decided in that court. Just because they are worded the same as the bible, doesn't mean that there is a state-sponsored church. You see? I can see where you could call them on it if they had "Thou shalt not have any god's before Yahweh."coz that one is for Jews and Christians and not for EVERYONE (legally, anyway)

Orfeo - They don't have so many different 'versions' as 'translations.' Essentially, translations are the same thing in diferent languages, but a version can be a complete revision and not too many people really do that.
Also, you can't separate 'failure to acknowledge a god' and 'promoting the nonexistence of God.' when you fail to acknowledge a god, it is given that there IS a god, you just dont acknowledge him/her/it. When you promote t's nonexistence, you are not saying there is one.

It just seems that lately everyone wants to 'tolerate' EVERYTHING except Religions. And it seems to us religious people that people just don't want to be told how to live, they want to do anything they can get away with under man's laws because they are looser than religious laws.

I don't think it's "taboo," I just think that if atheists beleive in nothing, and atheism is a 'religion,' then anywhere there is state-sponsored nothing (such as the blank space where the ten commandments used to be in that courthouse), is a violation of the separation of church and state.

When they removed the ten commandments, they essentially replaced them with nothing. They took the basic tenets of Judaeism and Christianity and foolishly replaced them with the basic tenets of Atheism! YOU CAN'T DO THAT!

There are a lot of religious people on the Right. But there are a lot of Atheist/Agnostics on the Left. Both are trying to change the laws to fit their own personal idea of what is right. The leftists are changing it for their personal beliefs just as much as the righties. But you all have to piss and moan about the right, because their beliefs are based on a book whereas YOURS are based on multiple philosophers (and pop-culture), and not just one source.
