WON VERSION:

Download the steam installer,

go into your HL directory, BACKUP these files:

 • cg.dll
 • cgGL.dll
 • hw.dll
 • sw.dll

Point the installer to your half-life directory (where hl.exe is), and install :P (the installer will overwrite the DLLs!!! so back them up!)

It should appear in your custom games list in your lovely WON HL

Enjoy! W00t!

in Reissues is Released! [HL1 Mod] - downlo Post #250393
It's done! After two years and many highs and lows, we've finally got this mod finished. Here's the official press release:

"Reissues" is a community compilation of 30 single player Half-Life 1 levels authored by a mix of various designers. Each one has created their own unique, self-contained chapter: you'll spelunk into ancient Egyptian tombs, scale mile-high cliff sides, and fight your way through several clever re-imaginings of Black Mesa - among other exciting setpieces!

Why did we bother squeezing this last bit of mileage out of a decade-old game engine? Because Half-Life 1 offers a unique feel and aesthetic that makes it a timeless classic; because great gun fights remain great fun fights, even without shiny next-gen graphics; because we love what we do, and we hope you'll love it too.

in Beta character in german half-life files Post #228805
Germany has tight controls on violence in video games - the "german" version of farcry has reduced blood and no ragdolls for example. Not that it matters, since a "patch" comes out usually the next day after release, if not immediately.

Overall - the hallways were great. I'm disappointed that a few great looking WIP screenshots didn't get submitted. Again, well done to everyone who entered.
Quote:

Notable items to consider: "Atmosphere" - in games generally, you have to consider 2 senses: Vision and Sound. Using those 2 you need to create emotion. Corridors may seem trivial, but they can be used to create tension, fear, or even apprehension. And in some cases - where you create maps where you must run from place to place often, corridors become the major parts of maps.

Notably lacking: env_sound - nobody used them.. env_sound entities are ever so subtle - but REALLY add to the immersion.

I think we took a bit too long with this one for a mini-compo. Next time we'll be faster.

HUGE Thanks to Caboose for telling me to post in the forums. You all owe him thnx - Also to PTS and srry for helping lots!

Until next time!

in Upon decompiling HL Post #220119
Decompilers = Fail.

They suck at brushwork and texturing. And don't give you a very accurate idea of how the map was made.

The only things you'll get "right" are the entities (point, not brush).

Don't read too much into entity names :D
There's more fun stuff in the comments in the SDK

Don't forget your sounds (ambient_generic, env_sound), lights (spot & omni) for ambience!

in Random Mini-Compo #00001a - Hallways Post #219654
The screenshots i've seen so far look very promising!

Even if you have an old hallway section from an old map you'd like to submit, post that anyway.

But Remember that it's a halway, not a room... ;)

Moar tips:
 • Keep it simple and subtle.
 • Details in floors, ceilings work better in hallways - Details on walls are best left in "rooms".
 • Remember what a hallway IS. Avoid making something that looks too much like it could be it's own "room"
Hallways don't have any "functions" apart from getting you from one end to the other.

MiniCompo time!

Engine: HL1

1: Make a halway
2: ???
3: IRC people vote on the best one
4: Profit. etc..

Ok.. Make a hallway. Freestyle. Obviously, it must have exit/entry point to be a halway (duh).

Post a screenshots and or compiled bsp! - you can post .map files if you like. Anything over 5 MB i won't bother by arse looking at. It's a hallway ffs... Use your common sense.

Your ability to follow vague instructions will be taken into account. Questions about the compo will count against you.

Go!

and err.. if you don't have OpFor (the mod..) there's little point making maps for it - you won't be able to run them properly.

But if you're just talking about textures - then you don't "have" to use any wad whatsoever.
