Yep, I finally got a new video card! My dad bought it at Fry's for 40 dollars. It's a NVIDIA FX 5500 128MB AGP Overclocked by BFG. I am happy with its performance.

Here's an estimate of the FPS results on these games:
CS/HL: 100 FPS (was 72 before until I realized fps_max was set to 72...and probably the reason why my old card ran at a 72 FPS peak) on 800x600
UT2004 Demo: 35-50 FPS on most settings about medium-low on either 640x480 or 800x600 (I can't remember)
DOOM3: 30-40 FPS on low settings on 640x480
HL2 Demo: 30-40 FPS on low settings on 640x480
Halo: 35-50 FPS on low settings on 640x480
3DMark2001SE: 5280 3DMarks

Do you think it's a good deal? What do you think about the video card? Tell me your opinions!

Oh yeah, I didn't buy it just today, I bought it last week.

who cares, as long as you got a video card that works. I got a GeForce 4 but it works and does the job. I dont care whether buying a like ?200 grpahics card will make some pixels better. It isnt exactly from the game PONG to HL2 is it ?

Altough when it is night time in the matrix online surrounding things turn black(the textures) but when its light everything is normal.

Ah well

Eeh, That's pretty crappy...
Oh, And no-one plays games with resolution 640x480..

The 5500s are pretty decent, aren't they? Can't say I've kept up on NVIDIA cards much.

thats not good fps for HL2 on low settings. i run mine on high at 1280x800 and get about 40fps.

Well, I don't exactly know what the FPS range was. I just guessed. In fact, I think I know it was much higher. Probably about a minimum of 45 FPS or something. Blame my bad memory.
Oh, And no-one plays games with resolution 640x480..
Sometimes, I don't really care as long as you aren't playing at something like 400x300. The HL2 demo still looked like 800x600.

I have no problem playing at a low res as long as it has good fps, I think that is more important.
Posted 19 years ago2005-04-10 00:18:04 UTC Post #102929
My Radeon 9000 will get about 15-30 fps on HL2 with the screen res at 1280x800 on medium detail and full shaders. Not the best FPS but it is a good balance between the quality of the graphics and the framerate. Just looks too ugly on low.
Posted 19 years ago2005-04-10 01:55:44 UTC Post #102938
You play on those settings?

I play on everything on super-high, 'cept AA and AF (4x and 8x respectively), at 1024x768 for the time being. I'll probably have to raise the res. and drop the AA when I get my TFT.

Thats the minimum. Its usually around 25 fps. So thats fairly smooth.
Posted 19 years ago2005-04-10 10:17:57 UTC Post #103042
That reminds me...I have The Frozen Throne set on all high settings except Spell Detail, which is probably on medium. I probably set the resolution to 800x600x16. (Who ever plays on 32 bit color? It's like a waste of extra coloring just for getting an object to stop dithering, which you probably won't even care about...)
Posted 19 years ago2005-04-10 11:03:01 UTC Post #103064
I play on 32-bit colour as onionskinning is often quite evident in 16-bit. 16-bit colour provides 2^16 variations (only 65,536) wheras 32-bit colour provides a total of 4294967296!

nVidia GeForce 4/5 series are trash. Not including the GeForce 6, the last decent GeForce series was 3. They literally owned for their time, but kinda got owned by ATi's Radeon 8500.

Seventh is right. You don't even know what you're missing and the sweetness of 110 fps unless you've played HL2 on a good machine.

I thought I had it good when I played HL2 on my Celeron/Radeon 9200 with 512 MB of RAM. But now I'm playing it again on my new rig, and I can't imagine going back to anything below 50 fps anymore.

Well some of use cant afford that kind of stuff now can we? Im just glad I can actaully play it. And its not that laggy, even at 15 fps. And it only goes that low during intense combat with lots of explosions and all that. I actually get about 35 fps on Water Hazard while racing around on the fanboat.

And on 3D Mark 2001SE I got 5886 3D Marks after overclocking. Thats on a 32MB 4x AGP card. Odd how dandylions card got less than mine :

some of us cant afford that kind of stuff
Yeah, I know. That's how I justify to myself whenever I get called in last-minute to work. All the additional hours are just paying off my machine, and I reward myself with a new game or another piece of hardware.

And that's another reason to study hard now and get a high-paying job later, for all you students. :D

What's the price difference between a 9600XT and a 9800Pro? I'd say go for the 9800 if it's not too much more expensive.

Despite what they say, you actually can upgrade the video card in some laptops.
Heres a guide to it http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500video.htm
Only problem is that theyre hard to come by. Cant get them on Newegg.

Best deal I could find http://www.impactcomputers.com/h3251.html

I've got a 9700 Pro in mine (laptop) :P.

The 9800 Pros are quite superior to the 9600 XTs. I'd suggest saving up a little more now and getting a rather better card.

My laptop can't decide what card it's got- it says Radeon 9600/9700. Wtf? It's 128mb btw, but goes really slow when I turn AA and AF on, even at low levels. It also has two default monitors in the display settings. Is this an error?

Sounds fine to me, Llama. My 9700 goes like hell when I put on AA. As for the 9600/9700, they probably have the same core or somethin'.
