Have you seen the trailer for it? Its flipping amazing! Some of it looks almost photorealistic. It looks like its gonna take a supercomputer to run though!
High Dynamic Range Lighting Looks spectacular, I wonder what tools valve will give us to harness the powers of it!

Haven't seen it yet. Is it a mod or a game using the Source engine? Post links to it's home page!
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-08 15:44:00 UTC Post #108374
It is a game level developed by Valve to show the new techniques for the source engine. In this case HDRI.

This isnt a new technique, its used by graphical designers for years. You can create an extreme realistic lightning wiht it in your scenes and renders.

And now valve implemented this technique in the source engine, it requires a high end computer wich supports the right shaders.

Fingers crossed, I'll be able to run it. 9800 Pros are still pretty high-end.

Indeed, though i dont think there is any really usefull goal to this technique in games until we have reached the next generation of games and graphic cards.

Dare I try it on a Radeon 9000? It does have shader support but it will probably result in horrible framerates. Oh well, it will be worth seeing it though, even if it does lag.
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-08 18:07:10 UTC Post #108409
The trailer for HDR lighting was awesome, although sadly a little short. I wonder if a 9700 can handle it though...

g0t 9800 pro? Hopefully it'll work. When will valve release this lost coast bitch then?
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-08 19:37:48 UTC Post #108415
They're only releasing it to a high-end audience, afaik, so only those with teh powar will even be able to run it.

THen someone can make a in game video (not the console commands but anthoer program) of it and distribute it. :)

Yeah but it's not like playing it nub >;|

You can't steal the new models and materials from it, that's what really bugs me. I bet someone leaks them or the entire thing out anyways ;x

Think it could work on a 9600XT?
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-09 02:49:36 UTC Post #108459
I read somewhere that when it comes out it will detect if your systems capable which annoys me cause my computer is below min system spec for HL2 they should let us decide. Anyway its only a small part of valve working on it. The want to put the source engine to the max!
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-09 02:54:47 UTC Post #108461
Thats dumb. I want to see it no matter how low my framerate is.
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-09 04:21:28 UTC Post #108470
If your computer is below the minimum scec, then you WON'T be able to run it. Period.

You still should have the option to try imo..

I hope it will work when I upgrade to a 9600 Pro. Otherwise I shall kill someone :x

It should!

Sari, if your graphics card doesn't support the shaders, then it would just be utterly impossible. Some modern CPU extensions would probably be a requirement too.

You mean a cut-down version without the fancy graphical stuff?

I mean that they decide who will play and who won't. The concept bothers me..

I agree. And the sooner I fry my 9000 the sooner I can get that 9600 :D

I'd love that. My graphics card probably wouldn't be able to use HDR, but I'd still like to play the level.

I'm guessing that everyone who owns HL2 will be able to download, but there's no chance in hell that it will be able to run it! If your card doesn't support any sort of shader technology (anything before DX8) then it simply will not work despite any efforts you make to try and get it run. It's like trying to conjure something out of nothing.

I may be in luck. My card is DX8.1 :D
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-10 03:18:07 UTC Post #108693
I'm guessing (and this is a wild-ish guess) that HDR needs a DX9 based card.

Almost certainly. "Programmable shaders" sounds like a requirement, and I think they only really exist in DX9 hardware.

They sould just give us freaks with no money for a decent graphics card a non fancy graphics level and let us play away!
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-10 11:08:37 UTC Post #108744
I'm glad I own a good computer then :)
Still the size of the level will lag as well?

Kinda cool as a multiplayer level if it ever was made for that :)

Lets all just beg m0p for some good screenshots :(
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-10 15:04:03 UTC Post #108795
You called? I'm gettin a Radeon X900 (R520) very very soon (before it's released, shh), so I can get you some screenies as soon as I get the card and this Lost Coast thing. So you should get some max res, all settings up screenies, maybe a movie (will availible in low quality compressed MPEG, medium quality MPEG, high quality MPEG and if I can be bothered to upload it anywhere, uncompressed AVI).

By the way, how long has it been since they first anounced lost coast anyway? VALVe seems to have a tendancy for pushing release dates farther and farther into the future. Half-Life 2's release for example.

But it's no different than saying we don't have our private jets, so we don't have the ability to fly to anywhere in the world on a whim (like some rich bastards).

Having money makes you privileged, even though you might not deserve it.

Can you get an extra so I can buy it from you for some outragous price that Id probably be willing to pay.

Whats the clock on it anyway.

Id like to see how it performs against two 6800's in SLI mode.

I'd like to see two X900s working together in the SLI-equivalent ATI thing more :).

Posted 18 years ago2005-05-11 16:04:21 UTC Post #108942
I don't think they will make cards with their SLi tech (AMR, didn't they call it?) for a long time. And no, I can't get anyone a card, it's a review card for reviewer use only, and I have to give it back to ATi after a week or two, sadly, since it's a prerelease card. I suppose I could just keep it and hope ATi don't notice it.
