I just had a wierd thought...

I understand that headcrabs are born from a large beast known to mappers as Bigmomma... so... Where do the baby headcrabs in HL2 come from? The little ships that come out of the sky are combine, right? Well, did the combine capture the Bigmomma? I thought that Freeman killed it while on Xen? Are there multiple Bigmommas? I have not seen any other way for the headcrabs to reproduce, unless the zombies are mating... Man... what wierd babies they must have...
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-11 21:26:48 UTC Post #120371
I've always thought that all headcrabs can breed new ones and Gonarch was just an elder headcrab that lived for an excessively longer time than others.

I've also theorized about the sacks on baby headcrabs because I know many have probably onwdered the same. Maybe females keep the sack but males lose it sometime during their maturation. Booya.

Thats stupid! It's only a game you know so you don't need to find reasons for stuff in it!

There are more than just 1 big momma, and even if there wernt, I would think that they would find more ways to make a headcrab, genetically enginneer them or something...why do we care anyways? Noone likes a head humper

I would worry much more about the Snarks, since they have a avarage live span of 20 seconds.

i always thought as headcrabs exactly like ants. Eventually, the qieen headcrab/ant dies and new ones go off to make new colonys. Thats how i always imagined it.

Are you sure that there were multiple Gonarchs?

Was there another in another HL mod or something, cause HL1 lead me to believe that there was only one of this beast, since it had a name.

Also, it is evident that the Bigmomma actually spawns the baby headcrabs, so why would they have alternate forms of reproduction???

Plus, Valve called it the "BigMomma", specifying that the large spider with 1 testicle was a female, and also that it gave birth to young headcrabs.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-13 00:23:20 UTC Post #120501
You may also think it is both male and female! :P
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-13 00:30:54 UTC Post #120503
Bahhh...I'll stop thinking on the Gonarch as a monster in a game so you wont get so pissed off! ;)

It must be both for if it would have been a female it would spawn sackless osprings(male) and the ones with the sack!(female) Not only the ones with the sack! :o
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-13 02:28:46 UTC Post #120506
Gonarch gets killed in HL1, Nihilanth says "Done, what have you done" obviously implying you just struck a huge blow against Xen, implying you just killed the one and only Gonarch.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-13 03:43:35 UTC Post #120516
He said that??? :zonked: I never heard him!!! There could be more then one Gonarch but there must be very few then! :P
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-13 04:35:44 UTC Post #120519
I think that gonarch was created for the invasion, to spawn headcrabs more qiuckly... I think that headcrabs could spawn from zombies...

See the opening in the stomach? maybe that's the place, where the headcrab lays his eggs, when he has controlled the victim. After the baby headcrabs hatch - the headcrab leaves the corpse and goes on, with his kiddies, searching for victims... :

invasion? I thought that those meddling scientists were the ones who constructed a portal to enter Xen from our world and vise versa. That removes the idea of Gonarch being made for invasion, thus having her to be minding her own business makin' babies while Gordon pops out of nowhere and she reacted kind of violent and all... Just a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, I guess.

About Gonarch being the only "baby maker", this is sort of supported due to the fact that this "beast" was even given a name to begin with.

...but WHO CARES?!
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-13 05:20:37 UTC Post #120526
Dubster, he stuffs his egg sack with food when he eats!? Don't think so! This is his mouse and he can't lay eggs in there for he jumps first on the head and kills the victim, then he turns the victim into a zombie! They created two animations to show this! The scientist fighting against one headcrab and kills him then the second one jumps on the scientist's head and kills the him! :P And the second is a headcrab sitting on a scientist's head!

Headcrabs come from baby headcrabs growing up from the gonarch.
In HL2 the combine capture Xen, probs have a Gonarch and make her lay them and they shoot them in canistors etc etc.

The advisor is probs in charge of it all...

Have you ever wondered about the other things in HL2? Like where does Father Grigori eat? Does he actually feast on zombie meat? I didn't run into any supermarket in Ravenholm. In fact, nothing looked very fresh in Ravenholm, except perhaps fresh headcrab blood.

I've always wondered where the science team went to the bathroom in HL1. Black Mesa didn't seem to have any er, facilities.

There were actually some "facilities" at the beggining of the game, but like in almost every single videogame out there, the level of detail from the first part of a game is usually better than afterwards.
There are 2 main reasons why that happens:
-There's less need to catch the players attention to play the game, so you can reduce detail while making combat more present. (you already beleive you are in that world, it's just a matter of shooting bad guys now!)
-The other reason is that at the beggining of a project, the team is usually much more motivated than in later stages, when concept art becomes less important and debugging is the main worry... : Like Michael Abrash (ID software) once said: "When you are done with 90% of the game, you find that you need to work on the other 90%"

Back to the topic: if we consider that Nihilant was under the Combine's control (like Breen was), it's quite possible that the combine had already captured a large number of xen individuals, including headcrabs, vortigaunts and even a bigmomma. It would explain why Xen sometimes looked a bit deserted, in decadence. They probably experimented with headcrabs and that's why we see other species in HL2... :zonked:

Heres one...

How did Barney get your Crowbar? The game did not end in BlackMesa.

Maybe the Crowbar he found was the one you dropped when Gordon was knocked out. If that is so... Then for half of the game Gordon used another crowbar.

And now, his trusty weapon has been turned into dust.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-14 17:38:12 UTC Post #120876
Well, since the weapon model is different in both games, we can assume it's (was) a generic crowbar.
I'd ask another question. Both HL games have a strong continuity within their stories, except for some moments like Gordon knocked out in BM and City17, being stuck in the teleporter for a week, etc. So my question is:
When does this guy eat? And dont tell he receives vitamins and proteins through the HEV suit, because it just wasnt made for that :S
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-14 17:55:58 UTC Post #120880
Barney said that "You dropped this back at Black Mesa" when he gives you the crowbar.

I guess with all that tension... Gordon doesn't eat for the whole 2 days hes active. It is about 2 days right?
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-14 18:07:29 UTC Post #120883
he eats solar energy
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-14 19:31:05 UTC Post #120904
Or headcrabs. Walter has a great recipe for it!
Barney said that "You dropped this back at Black Mesa" when he gives you the crowbar.
If you've played Blue Shift you'll remember in the ending Barney gets teleported to a little grate where he sees Gordon getting dragged away...assume he just grabbed it then.

Gordon eats headcrabs? There was a "Lost World" playstation game in which you had to feed on other dinosaurs to recover health and increase your lethal instinct. The game wasnt successful. It was 3D but still used the "old 2D scroll" method for gameplay :zonked:

Let's just say that Gordon gets survival rations everytime he picks up a healthkit. He just doesnt make sound when chewing because stealth is very important when you are being chased by the Combine...
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-14 21:07:05 UTC Post #120917
Well, Gordon is one skinny ass dude to fit in that orange suit... Maybe hes anorexic or something.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-14 21:24:43 UTC Post #120918
Skinny bulemic, probably. I mean, he must eat enourmous amounts of food, and throw up afterht the meals during the long loadign times.
Bah, I hate writing posts at this time of day. Dozens of spellign erors.

they didn't adopt the fricken Vortigaunts...

When the Nihilith was destroyed, those things around the vortigaunts' neck's lost their power and control over them. The vortigaunts must have roze up against their oppressors, since they no longer took orders from them. Some must have joined the humans in their society.

big-momma is female. Or else why would id be called big-momma in my opinion, big-momma spawns little mommas and male headcrabs, the male headcrabs are like the soldiers and also help breed (why do you think they can hump things?) big-momma probably gets laid by  big-daddy  shivers at thought
