Not being an expert in the biology of made up aliens but I would assume that, as a parasite they don't feed on anything, rather they simply live off a host. If they don't find one, they die within a few days.
I'd guess watching the Alien films (well ok, I won't make you watch anything after Alien 2, since they were crap) would give you a nice fictional idea to set your worried mind at ease; since facehuggers were obviously the main "influence*"

If you look at the official opposing force website you'll see that Black Mesa was nuked long after freeman left it, duh. (and its on many 'storyline' websites) Elon, its way too obvious that they are all related with each other. Mabye its because the legs on a baby headcrab are like that of a male headcrab? If its female (according to my theory) its legs would probably shortened down during growth.

I think its some more sorts of headcrabs or rather more stages. One when the hosts body is falling apart. Becos they cant last forever. Then they leve the host and finds a bigger one(possible an other race) for exampel the original spieces behind the alien grunt. And that problably contiues until they host an gargantua. After that they becomes Big momma... But during HL1 its possible that many of the needed species are killed for making sure it dosent become more then needed big mommas. I also think that the big mommas now are made in a lab.
