lo der!

well, i have never used cubemaps before seeing as i had such a crap PC that it made no difference whether i did or didnt..

Well, iv got a brand psanking new graphics card and HL2 works on high settings so i thought 'eugh. water looks crap. id better use a cubemap'

so put a cubemap in every room of my map and loaded it ingame after a nice short compile and typed buildcubemaps into the console.. it then did this crazy thing at the top left of the screen.. like touring the map... so anyway, the tut said 'restart the map and the cubemap will be saved' so i restart the map and the water looks like nodraw.. it does that multiple image thing. horrible.. any help?

It's not the cubemap fault, it's probably the actual water. NODRAW on all sides? Not func_ed?

Apart from what Rabid just pointed out,
-The map must have undergone a full compile
-If you have a DX9 card, water will work even without cubemaps.
-Certain water textures reflect, others just refract etc. dev_water3_exp should be reflective (expensive water)

keep trying and good luck!

it is nodraw on all sides. i have a DX9 compatable card. its not tied to an entity.. it just acts as though the water isnt there.. as if the nodraw face even on the visible face... its very strange

I have reflective materials in the actual game and in maps iv downloaded. i just cant get mine t'work

Water is just that way sometimes. You only have it on one level of the map right?

it is nodraw on all sides
Do you mean "all" sides or do you have a water/[water texture] on one side (preferably the top, which you should)?

Even if there is a texture or compiling problem, you should be able to swim in that invisible water brush, and if you shoot at it, you should see splash sprites. If that doesnt happen, then there isnt water at all, and as BJ just said, all you have is a full nodraw brush which of course will not act like water... :quizzical:

nah, it acts like water and it looks fine when i swim in it and look up through it.. but looking down onto it looks like nodraw.

Nodraw is on every face except the top where i have one of the sewer water textures.

i have 2 cubemaps above it -well spaced and i have a few physics objects in it.. they start above it and drop.

and drop
What do you mean by that? The cubemaps in the water? If so, take it out.

This is a very common problem. I think its a bug.

nono, the physics objects start above the water and drop into it.. the cubemaps are about 10 units up

Are you sure the compile was completely succesful?
Invisible water is usually the result of a compile problem.

the only problem in the log was 'memory leak'

but that shows up all the time

"Memory leak" isn't a problem.

Try using a different water texture.

yeah.. breakthrough... i used the cnalcheap_dx7 textures and that solved the problem of the nodraw looking face... but it also means theres no reflections or even wavey water.. just like i had before the new graphics card...

the walls are shiney and when i impulse 81 it all appears to work.. just the water causin the problem

Keep trying different water textures then.

yeup. that appears to be it.. one or 2 of the water textures just dont seem to agree with my system.. ah well. glad thats over..

Were you using a _bottom texture perchance?

Cubemaps are actually cubic environment maps. They are used to determine reflections for shaders by taking a 6-sided 'box' and applying it as necessary.

I believe it's recommended to place cubemaps a minimum of 16 units from the nearest surface.

It doesn't really matter, it's only if you want proper reflections from a player POV.

I understand the cubemap placement may not solve his immediate texture problem, RM. But if he's going to use them.. aren't proper reflections the idea? :|

yeah... i am going for a very reflectivey look but it doesnt matter anymore anyways. the cubemaps were working i was just giving up after seeing the water (didnt look at the rest of the map)

it was just this 1 water texture doesnt like me

just thought of something, try running buildcubemaps 2

Hmf I noticed that bug too and you just used a wrong texture :)
