Not necessarily well. What spec. is the rest of the system? Similar-age stuff?

1GB of PC4000 RAM, 3.2GHz P4 540J that will be overclocked to around 4GHz if all goes well.

Thats is actualy very good. I still need another 256 megs of RAM untill I reach a gig, but it is pretty cheap now. You procesor is good!

Cool it even got air conditioning! Just kidding. :sarcastic: What is that fan anyway? :quizzical:
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-03 03:48:13 UTC Post #131950
Mehh, average card. The rest of the system is half decent though. If you wanna hit over 4GHz on air, might I suggest you go for some decent air cooling? Thermalright XP-90 coupled with a high CFM fan is an excellent choice.

FFS Elon, even for most gamers 9600 is average. It's a fact. Don't be moronic.

FFS m0p, let the guy be happy ffs. Don't be moronic.

I think that card will be able to run HL2 quite well (if you go easy on the AA and stuff ;) )
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-03 06:13:24 UTC Post #131997
The poorest part of the system, though. m0p is actually right, a 9600 is probably a little below-average for mid-spec gamers.

I've got a 9800pro, and I can barely run medium settings.

He was suggesting aircooling. For once I stand wholeheartedly behind m0px.

I have the same card and i run on high with no problems, without AA of course, i know it's limits ;)
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-03 07:22:51 UTC Post #132014
on a 9800XT, HL2 is fully playable with everything @ max with 2x aa and af. performance should be similar on 9800pro.

<spoiler type="hl2" audience="veryslowplayers">

I challenge anyone with a 9800 who runs above 640x480 and with settings on High to tell me that the Strider-busting roof scenes didn't lag at all.

I cant remeber that scene. Proberly because my PC crashed :P
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-03 09:05:57 UTC Post #132023
Nope no lag at all. Settings:

Texes: High/AF 2x
Shaders: High
Models: High
Reflections: Reflect All
Res: 1024x768
AA: 2x

This is with a 9800XT at 460/420(840).

Well, I think the standard Pro speeds are 380/338; quite a bit lower.

I managed to get mine up to XT speeds, but it didn't seem to make any difference to the Source benchmarking. To be honest, clocking my Athlon 2400+'s FSB from 266MHz to 333MHz and lowering the multiplier, thereby raising the CPU freq. from 2.0 to 2.3GHz, didn't make much difference either. What do you reckon might be a bottleneck? They made a little difference at low resolutions, but very little else.

Blab.
I've got xp2700+ 2,2ghz , 1024ram, 6600GT 500/900 @ 570/1000 and HL2 works 'fine' (40fps+) @ High (No AA & AF - If I remember right)

Just got a new PC myself.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice, GeForce 6600 GT 128MB PCI-E and 1024MB DDR400.

It's sweet.
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-03 10:21:10 UTC Post #132049
Seventh, the reason it doesn't make any difference is because the XT has a beefed up core as well as faster clocks. XT is r360, and Pro is r350. The XT has a bit extra onchip cache, as well as faster memory (faster timings).
m0p m0pIllogical.
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-03 12:09:01 UTC Post #132093
Ah, I didn't know that it had extra cache. I've got an R360 core, though; are there variants of R360 too?

jaardsi: I'm gunna have an AMD Athlon64 3500+ Venice (pwned), a GeForce 6800GT 256MB AGP (pwned), and 1024MiB DDR400 (uh, okay, tie there) ;>. ?808.46 ? going to be sometime after Christmas, fingers crossed.

A 9600XT is the best I can afford right now. Got it for $70 (including shipping) so it was a bargain. Its not the best but anything is better than my Dell with its ancient 9000. Once I get the money Ill be upgrading to a X850XT. Or actually I might get the X800GT since they are only around $150 and have either the X800XT or X850XT core. If Im lucky I could unlock to whichever one I happen to get.

Dont worry about the cooling m0p, I got that monsterous block of copper known as the Tower112.

I might go for a PCI-E if I don't stagger the upgrades. Aren't the PCI-E 6800s bridged, anyway?

As a bus, there is no speed advantage of PCI-E. There is only a tiny difference in speed between AGP 4x and 8x on the ATi X850 and the nVidia 6800Ultra, showing that carrds have only really just saturated AGP 4x. The only consumer advantage of PCI-E is motherboards that support crossfire and sli.

Pfft. You all act like the 9600XT is crap. I got one and I run HL2 on high settings. But maybe thats cause I have it overclocked. HrnyGoat you should replace that crappy stock heatsink with a Zalman VF700Cu. Then you can really OC it.

PCI-E is the way to go.

PCI-E is the way to go.
No its not. PCIe is a total waste of money unless you are getting CrossFire or SLI. PCIe and AGP perform the exact same in benchmarks.
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-04 04:34:57 UTC Post #132269
A 9600XT is mediocre, I'd say. I definitely do recommend a Zalman heatsink for that, though, having one myself too :).

Cards which are natively AGP which are ported to PCI-E will perform slightly less well as PCI-E cards, but I imagine most in the future will be the other way 'round, built for PCI-E and bridged to AGP, meaning a minor performance hit.

If you're buying a new computer, going for PCI-E is worth it even just for upgradeability's sake.
Posted 18 years ago2005-09-04 05:49:40 UTC Post #132272
jaardsi, that's BS. Just buy a P-M 780, and an Asus CT-479+P4C800-E and an ATi R520 (when they are released). Overclock the P-M (good ones hit 2.7GHz on stock cooling, and make sure you set multi low so you can run your RAM at higher speeds). That setup will beat any AMD64 setup to death. If you don't believe me, read benches. There is alot of life left in Intel i875P/AGP/Socket478 thanks to Asus's P-M socket adapter. AMD64 is a huge hack. It's not even "true" 64-bit processing.

I kinda missed your point there, what has that got to do with PCI-E?

You weird, weird man...

It's describing why AGP still has life left in it.

whats that equivelent too for nvidia?

Im getting a 3ghz and a 6800 in the winter :) a little upgrade from 2ghz with 6600GT.

Next one will be a 4ghz (thatll be out by then :) ) 2gb of dual channel ram, 7800GTX

If anyone wants to discuss the more "finer" points of graphics cards, sign up on hardwareasylum.com forums (and tell the registration "masterofpuppets" referred you ;)) and take a look in the 3D section. The admin wants me to kinda spread the word and help the site grow a bit, and as this is a graphics cards thread, I thought this would be a good place to spread the word :) [/advertise]

I won't give out any details, but it was a nice card. I can't compare it to a 7800GTX since I haven't used one yet, but it's still alot faster than an X850XTPE.
