Adobe After Effects and Discreet Combustion
I havent tried it with after effects, but it's fairly easy to do the effect in Combustion. The problem is that the method of "rotoscopy" forces you to modify the saber in EACH frame.
So if you have a 3 minute video, you have 180 seconds. If it has 20 frames per second... do the math. That's a lot of frames to edit. It's hard work, I assure you.

NTSC is 27.99 FPS, if I remember correctly. That's over five thousand frames of editing. Not practical :|.

I have done a 9 second video of the sword fight in Animatrix, transforming the swords into lightsabers. It took me AGES. And the Combustion demo added a red cross over the rendered AVI :(

The ones the pros use are real expensive. They cost ?5,000 I think and they probably get it right. I don't think tgime would have been an issue for them. Its a lot harder to get lightsabers glowing in movies than it is in pictures I think....... :D

just use strip lights!

You can buy toy ones off this gizmo site, they havevideo previews by the customers who bought them.

The funny one is when this guy puts on a Darth Vader mask and randomly attacks people with the lightsaber.

The ones the pros use are real expensive
The full version of After Affects is US$999.00
And Discreet Combustion (now called Autodesk Combustion) costs $995.000
IMO those are already expensive.
Getting lightsabers to glow in movies is getting them to glow in thousands of pictures, with the added dificulty that sometimes you need to apply mask frames if, for example, part of your body prevents you from seeing part of the saber.

Alex, striplights looks like solid metirial that glows a bit but the light saber doesn't look solid at all. ;) So what they do is add blur colorfull sticks and add a glow around them.

The only good and expensive movie editing program I know is adobe primire but I don't think you do it with that program. Anyway what does this program do?

P.S: Alex, I know you where joking but it's still puzzling how they made it...

The lightsabers itself where metal bars, they aded the glows in with the effect programs from discreet. They set up a path to track through the frames, then they overlay the effect as a new layer.

I heard of this discreet but never knew what it was!

Try manually editting all the frames :D i wonder how long would it take you to edit just few seconds :D

I think I spent three or four hours on a 9 second video with two lightsabers.

I'll try to extract the frames and recombine them with virtualdub or something. And then I'll have to upload it somewhere... any suggestions?

I might be able to host it for a while, but I only have about 20MB to spare, though. :(

Do it in photoshop! OMG you lazy dudes...

I made a 10min film using only MSPAINT and video match, and yes, all the frames was made in paint...

and yes, it was ugly as hell, but also funny, and man i was proud :P
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-14 05:48:52 UTC Post #147066
Try doing that in 100,000,000 frames! ;)

Unless u work 24/7 then it would be easier to use striplights like alex suggested.
