I just noticed that both of my chassis fans went out. But I am wondering, how important are those fans anyway? Are they really necessary if I don't overclock my machine?

I went through thirty rounds of CS:S straight, and the CPU temp reads 54 Celsius. That ain't bad. So does this mean I don't have to worry about replacing them?

I have an Athlon 3200+ XP.

Well I know nothing about the inside of PC's but if something stopped inside my PC I would get it fixed, they are there for a reason and should stay the same.

I'd air on caution and get some new fans. Some cheap ones.

In another year, I'll build another machine. So I am debating whether I should even bother fixing this old one.

Fans are cheap. You said you lost 2? that'll run you probably about $10-15 total. (if you don't get the fancy lit up ones, then you'll pay about $30.) That's assuming that you'll pop the case yourself and not pay someone else to do it. What's 54c in fahrenheit? I think that any temps below 120f should be ok.

54c = 129.2f

nah... i wouldn't worry. i've overclocked about 100mhz and with just me cpu fan my cpu is about 45 celius. i wouldn't worry until say 65-70 celcius, and even then you'll know if your computer crashes. then get more fans!!! is this a custom build, coz obviously if it is a manufactured comp, they have tested Cpu temps for hours at max usage, and allow right about of cooling. although, judging from your CPU clock speed, your ok

It's a custom-built machine.

Thanks for the reassurance. I am not cheap, but when I opened up the chassis this morning, I couldn't figure out an easy way to exchange the fan in the front chassis. No screws, no plastic tab things...nothing.

I'll just let it be for now. If I can play FarCry and CS:S without heating up the computer too much, I think I"ll be fine.

Fifty-four is no big deal. The critical temperature for a Barton is, I believe, 85?. My PC gets up to sixty-something with all the fans very low and low load (overnight)... that's according to (the motherboard manufacturer's) in-Windows software, though; my BIOS seems to report higher temperatures.

42? at the moment; 31? case; 11? ambient. Chilly feet. Beautifully quiet.

Mines seems to reach temperatures of 125C and -125C. Though i doubt that those numbers are accurate.

Um. They're not.

That's what i figured out to, i can hardly imagine having freezing temperatures in my computer or being able to boil water in it :) .

Haha, you can make ice cream or cook your breakfast.

maybe its athlons way of trying to encourage multi tasking computers. you know, cook your breakfast while surfing the internet. a new trend. Pepper, you've started a trend. :)

I fixed the side chassis fan--the power connector was just loose. However, I don't see the power connector to the front chassis fan, and it's still not turning.

However, after the side fan works, my idle CPU temp is now a cool 45 Celsius. Even after I play Source games with HDR on, it only goes up to about 51 Celsius.

I never knew that a single case fan would make such a big difference in CPU temperature.

screws open computer

Ah, the cold cokes are ready! Anybody wants some?

I've seen someone doing it, so it should be possible to cook a egg on your computer, i might try it myslef sometime running a live HDRI program or letting 3dsm render something :)

Yes they are, your computer will start to shutdown itself instantly sometimes mostly after half hour.It happened to my laptop it fan was broken but I didnt give a shit.So when I was playing Half-Life the laptop shutdown itself, then I tried to open the laptop again and again...It worked the day after.
