hi my name is red death im only 13 but in my mind i feel im a pretty decent mapmaker i came and checked out your contest and i was browsing around...im working on a new map right now its called de_grave and when i get finished with it im entering your next contest...but anyway theres two things i have a hard time understanding in mapmaking 1.what are cubemap entities and wat do they do and 2.what is the difference between different kinds of lighting...dynamic,environmental etc well cya :P

1. Cubemaps define the way light reflecs, if I'm not way off. Essentially, they make your map look better. Read this.

2. light = A light which emits light from it's center.

dynamic light = lights which can be pointed, moved around, turned on and off and so on. In general, lights that have physics.

light_environment = Acts as a sun, beaming down light from the skybox.

which would be the source questions forum. because you are mapping for HL2 hence you are working with the source engine.

Zombie: Dynamics can be parented, other lights cant, thats the main difference. Lights or Spots can be disabled or enabled as well IIRC.

If we want to get technical cubemaps are simply short for Cubic Environment Mapping. They are a very inexpensive form of specularity on world surfaces and models, as opposed to realtime reflection (water) or specularity.
