Some of the monsters were just removed, coz there were lots plenty of new ones..
Although I missed icky in the water hazard chapter

Anyhow, Race X is simply not included because they're no longer on earth.
My theory is, when the combine took control, they removed the remaining species from earth. They kept the Headcrabs (= Zombies) to use as flush-out weapons against human resistance.
A_slaves are vortigaunts, no longer under nihilanth influence.
Alien grunts and houndeyes where removed aswell.
The icky might have escaped black mesa and somehow made it to human waters, where combine can't touch them and they multiply.

remember in OPP4, you get that gun that shoots the green spores. They were barnacle spores and stick to those sticky things. when they hatch, a barnacle is born.. you hear a scientist's recorded message about it just before you get the barnacle as a weapon

Hmm, I wish the Ichyso...ichetho..the sea lion thing was in Half-life 2, it looked great in A Red Letter Day, when you fall into the water, now imagine how terrifying it would be having that chasing you through the water in actual gameplay, I found them to be the scariest part of Half-Life.

Race X and gonomes weren't included in HL2 most likely because Opposing Force was created, for the most part, by Gearbox. Had Gearbox been a contributor to Half Life 2 there might have been gonomes and Race X aliens. there were bullsquids in the betas, but for one reason or another they were taken out.
Want gameplay with icthyosuars? Map an ocean and throw one of those beasts in there. Not sure if they were coded to react though, the one in HL2 might have just been scripted but its worth a shot.

But i still hate em all the same, I was playing sven coop the other day going thruogh some pipes happly when theres an opening and there barnicals, I waited for someone to come and kill em. Sorry about the icthyosuars, I think they are only coded to do the motion when you get near them, at least in a gmod map, there were a couple of them in the water, all they did was just stay there untill you came up in about two feet from their face. And you could kill them which they would turn upwards and just kinda stay their. But through cheating you can spawn them in the actuall game.

Those newer monsters were Gearbox's idea, not VALVe's. I remember reading somewhere that VALVe ignored most aspects of Op4 and BS.

What are the Race X aliens, are they the Things on four legs, the squidshooter, and the other thing, like the shock gun, with the dude attached to it(well, its the other way around) or do you mean the Big blue thing at the end. What the heck was that by the way

Ok, now we can say that Valve didn't want the others in because of issues(wether gameplay or they belong to gear box) or if you want to make the HL universe seem more real, the Xen creatures all died when you killed Ninilanth, because he countrolled them with his mind. The ememies from Op4 and blue shift all died when black mesa was nuked. There. Wasn't that simple?

As far as forgotten monsters go, it'd be cool to see all of them in source all pretty and high-res, but they seem to have lost a place in the HL2 setting. Perhaps if you get further away from the cities, you'll see more wild and strange creatures.
