Which do you think is better? And why? Here's my opinion:

I feel that SP is a lot better than MP. For a start, I find multiplayer pretty boring a lot of the time, and SP is more exciting. SP allows you to get immersed in a story line, and have something more interesting to do than blow people's heads off. MP gets incredibly repetitive.

Second, just a point I feel I ought to make: Saying SP is too difficult to map is not really a suitable excuse. SP is the basis of everything, and like Andy said, most MP maps fail because people haven't tried to understand the SP basics, and gone straight to multiplayer. It's all down to practice, and a lot of the tutorials on this site are for single player maps. It's not difficult, and once you have a good grasp of the basics, it's easier to experiment with new entities.

I started with SP and I now find it very hard to map for MP because there is so little you can do with it. SP has so many more things you can do, and look at all those mods and map packs on Ten Four (http://tenfourmaps.telefragged/com). A lot of them are outstanding, and show a lot of very hard work. Just play one, and it'll probably take your mind right off multiplayer.

I feel that good SP mods encourage people to map for SP because you'll probably think "I wish I could do that", and you'll persist until you can. And as soon as you can make ends meet, they move the ends, and you have an even higher standard to work towards.

OK, that's my opinion. What is yours?

Seventh: I was a busybody and stuck paragraphs in here because otherwise most people wouldn't bother reading it. I'll take them out if you want :)

I like some MP mods. DoD and TFC are fun. But I agree, SP is definaely better!
m0p m0pIllogical.

Seventh: leave it as it is, I prefer it like that.

As in, leave the paragraphs.

SP is better if you want some story-line grunt-killing action, with complex entities and big scenarios.
MP is better if you want to play with some friends, try teamwork, etc.

But... SP is definately more fun to try out than mp :)

More fun to map for certainly.

SP all the way!

You can do whatever you want in an SP map because you can make it personel, if you know what i mean, but with MP you have to take other people into consideration because obviously your not going to be the only who plays it.

Also MP maps arent as fun to make because there are certain unwritten rules you have to abide by which make a MP map a good MP map, like open spaces and wide alleys, etc.

Single player is so much better and im glad people agree because all i ever see is MP mods these days, dont get me wrong theyre fun (for like 5 minutes), but there are some amazing MP Mods like Action HL. I love it, its the only mp mod i play, im suprised it hasnt taken off yet, it is so awesome!! But i havent been able to play it for ages because Steam wont update! I hate STEAM!!!!

SP

its where it all begins
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-08 16:24:43 UTC Post #15684
I dont beleive it!
I just spent like the last 15 minutes writing out about why i hate steam and how theyve screwed me out of playing AHL because you have to register your HL CD-KEY, whcih i no longer have and CDKEY generators dont work with it (it was pretty heated). And i just finished and i wanted to write "I hate Steam" in Bold and underlined, so i clicked on the little [?] to see if that told me, and then i came back and it had all gone!!

But now i dont feel as angry because i let off alot of steam (no pun intended) in the last reply....
Damn!

I still hate steam though...

Don't make me choose between SP and MP! :zonked: That's like making me choose between lasagna and baked Alaska... both are awesome, but are you looking for supper or dessert (or breakfast, man I love baked alaska!).

SP is great when I feel like thinking and paying attention to details... ever played POV? WOW. But but since I'm a tech-head and have 4 computers I like multiplayer. Online MP is OK but when you can look someone in the eye and laugh "You thought you could snipe!" - that's the best! I'm also heavy into Sven Coop, which is an even blend.

Most people seem to think you have more choice and freedom in single player mapping, obviously you've never mapped for TFC and seen how diverse the entity set allows you to go (cough overlord /pimp)
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-08 17:50:41 UTC Post #15704
I'm with you all the way Vassy, SP is better in every way. :)
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-08 18:10:00 UTC Post #15712
you know what- either way its mapping, and if you enjoy what you do - then keep doing it. No one should tell you to map for SP or MP...
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-08 20:18:24 UTC Post #15729
in my opinion sp is wack... if it wasnt for mp i wouldnt be playing computer video games.. dont you like real people commenting on your skills? do u guys program ur computer enemies to comment you? vassy you have to stop dissing cs cause every post i goto your there talking sh*t about it...is there a reason? u cant set ur enemies skill level? dont like that alot of cs players make "pointless" maps... my maps are not good.. i dont spend a lot of time on them...i make them to have fun and learn new stuff about mapping... so y dont u go diss a hl mapper instead of a cs one... just hurry up and leave a reply talking sh*t about me cause i dont care alright?
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-08 21:35:30 UTC Post #15733
I stand by my point that they both have their advantages, FOR TFC, for mods like CS I really don't understand why people bother. You have to actually try and create a realistic scenario, I cant do that!
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-09 03:12:54 UTC Post #15744
ahem, u can make MP NOT repetitive! there is a tut on counter-map that tells u how to change the layout of maps inbetween rounds!

I like SP for a time, but playing with friends beats everything if its on a good map!

wel alot of the world is expecting you to play multiplayer know! like there starting not to make good single player games its all online even xbox, GC, and PS2 have gone that way! What if you don't have the internet? Screw you says the company!

I found teh own:
Co op
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-10 15:58:54 UTC Post #15923
Yes, ZombieLoffe. Sven co-op. The one multiplayer mod I REALLY enjoy. CS is alright, I don't mind most multiplayer...althought TFC is a bit weird....heheh.

I've decided to start mapping for Sven because it's just like SP, but it's multiplayer, if you know what I mean, and I love the extra code in it (Uzis, opfor stuff...aaaaah). Plus, you can edit monster health and play it as if it were SP! So IMO, SP is better than all multiplayer except Sven.
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-10 18:20:17 UTC Post #15934
Multiplayer is better. Its more of a test of skill. Unless your a hacker, you actually have to have skill at the game to do good and you cant just type in impulse 101. Plus, playing real people is cool. It is much cooler to be able to talk to the person you are killing/being killed by. But there was this one single player mod for Half Life called Redemption. Counter-Life and Redemption are the 2 best single player mods out there. If any of you have never heard of Redemption, its the after math of Half Life. When Gordon has been hired by the G man. I think it only comes with CS retail though.
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-10 18:35:40 UTC Post #15938
hey! I have cs retail! gotto check it out.
By the way, I am a complete retard!
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-10 19:13:34 UTC Post #15949
Whats sven? But you dont need steam for either Redemption OR counter life is thats what your asking. Oh and if you you dont see Redemption in the install thing, thats not what the installer calls it. Its labeld as Absolute Redemption. Pretty obvious either way.

I really wish they hadn't ported sven to steam :/
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-11 11:23:28 UTC Post #15987
Now, who doesnt. I dunno what to download now, is there like a older non-steam sven co op that is still being played?

And WC-Dude, one of counter-lifes level transitions doesnt work.

I think there is, zombie.

ahem, read well people, they made also a non-steam version for sven coop i only need to downlaod it again

I beat all of Counter Luife without having any level problems what so ever. The problem is probably on your end.

Well, not likely, i didnt touch the folder since i installed it,
I have counter-life 5.7 beta.
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-13 05:25:31 UTC Post #16095
I think that the two are unconparable (is that a word?)
The only way I can play MP games is on my GC and I think it is HEAPS better than on a PC. Too much work to do on a PC, need 2 comps (at least), then networking or LAN etc. For a console, plug in an extra controller and u can laugh along together.

I've never played over the net though (with my crappy connection) so i don't really know what the experience is like. However I don't really like the idea of playing with ppl u don't kno, its not as fun as beating ur mate or something.

Just a matter of what u like. I love SP on PC and consoles but for MP its just consoles for me

I think online gaming pisses all over console gaming with friends, you seem to complain you need two pcs, yet you have to have the player in the same room as you for local multiplayer on consoles
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-13 10:44:20 UTC Post #16101
Anthony, you need to hit a few LAN parties. C'mon over! I already have a LAN set up and an extra NIC for your computer. In fact I have enough room and power outlets for 4 more computers, who else wants to play?

"Back in the old days" I could break my computer down and pack it up in less than 5 minutes. I had a suitcase that held everything except the moniter. Suitcase on the seat, moniter on the suitcase, seatbelt across the moniter, "Let's rock!" Then I'd go over to a friend's house and play Quake until either the sun came up or his girlfriend kicked me out so she could sleep.
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-13 17:30:39 UTC Post #16114
Bah! I want lan parties too, the internet caf?s with CS are too expensive and you rarely stay over 5-6 hours :x

Bah bah bah! move to sweden

BUT I THOUGHT YOU DIDNT LIVE IN SWEDEN OMFG

We're not really suicidal, atleast not me (most of the time).
Steinin lives in Finland but talks swedish.
Me, Saribous, Jester and hamst0r live in sweden.

And WC dude (sounds like a toilet, the wc part), is it mp or sp? nah i never played it.

The only reason I bitch about constantly seeing multiplayer maps is that there are too many of them, and some of them look like they were made in less than half an hour...there were a few I liked though, like fy_obvious, which was amusing, and all of the opfor maps, 'cos it's nice to see people branching away from cs...although I do actually like cs...but again, there's too much of it. I've always thought TFC is a little odd, but quite funny to play, and since TFC maps are rare, I don't mind 'em. Ricochet: Never played it, but again, it's nice to see people branching out.

ok.. if TWHL would have a SP review board: What would you like it to be?

What kind of reviews would you like?

Any particular style?

What kind of rewards / critiqu???
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-14 10:13:06 UTC Post #16162
I think we should split up the vault like this:
Completed maps
Sp
Mp
Example maps
Problem maps
Unfinished maps
Sp
Mp
Other stuff (models, prefabs etc.)

Wow, excellent idea. I think sensible but friendly reviews with helpful criticism. Isn't having your map reviewed a reward in its own right?

2 multiplayer and single player vaults?

Yes...unfinished one and completed one. It didn't come out quite right...I was thinking of dividing those two into sp and mp...and having an "other" vault for misc. stuff like prefabs.
