OK my question is...I want to buy a second hand laptop from Ebay..I need to know what are the minimal requirements to have for mapping/compiling, the laptop will be for this only..at the moment I am mapping for HL1 and think I will stay with HL1 until I become better at mapping, what Mhz,CPU,Ram,Graphix card do I need (remember this is not a super gaming laptop, just need minimal requirements)

I am building a new super computer tower for gaming only, this is costing me in excess of $2,500 Australian, the laptop will enable me to map at work when I have a break *cough....

thanx in advance

I'd say a 500MHz CPU, 256MiB o' RAM, and 16MiB o' graphics memory should be acceptable for HL1.

When I first started mapping, I ran it on a 266MHz Pentium MMX laptop with 32MB of RAM and a 2MB graphics card with no 3D support

When i started, i was on a desktop, with about 96 Mhz proccessor, like 64 mbs of RAM, and a 16 mb graphics card. ;)

... but bear in mind, of course, that while a minimal machine (with a video card capable of supporting OpenGL) should be okay for mapping, the compile time is directly related to how fast a machine it is.

Perfect for ya, but I want no flames for recommending this:

nope, this does work. I thought it was complete bull before.

But after seeing http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/video/40101000/rm/_40101790_ipods_carver22_vi.ram I was convinced it's true.

I have a pentuim III and it's fine for mapping/compiling.

I have a k6 -2 and thats fine. But got a step higher and don't get anything that looks like a k6 -2 (they are evil).

My laptop specs are:

846 MHz Pentium 3
256 MB RAM
OnBoard Graphics AGP (8MB Graphics) (ARGH!)

It runs HL on the lowest settings well and It goes alright for mapping except the compile times can soar through the roof!

The compile time thing is just a HL1 plauge... No matter the speed of your comp, it will take long..

Looks fine. 32MiB o' graphics memory, too... I think HL was designed with 4MiB in mind :).

Well I would personally never buy Dell, ive heard bad things about them, but that laptop looks alright... Im just a bit worried about the 16MB AGP that it has, thats double my laptop (Which I got for free btw) but you might not get very good graphics without lag and it might not render certain things (I have some problems with water in OpenGL mode) but if all you are worried about is making and compiling then maybe if complications arise you can always test/play your map on another computer?

For that price is good aswell, as long as it stays that price

Id say go for it because itll run half-life (if thats all you are really worried about lol)

EDIT: I heard of Roxby Downs somewhere lately... cant remember though...

Thanx for the information MNuTz but 500 English Pounds = $1,175.17 Australian Dollars...a bit to high for me...you have got a nice mum to buy you yours ;) ....im already spending enough on the computer tower already (over $2,500 = 1,175.14 English Pounds) :aghast:

I was a stock control manager, taking home about ?210 a week. Its just a case of saving up. I should of spent it on getting my VW Corrado on the road but my old PC was on its last legs!

Im from the Midlands, Shropshire.

Mind you, both me a the g/f worked at the same place and the company went into administration so we were all made redundant on the 22nd December. Im now jobless :(

Lefty you need a better video card. 16mbs are evil. Hurts makers of 16mb ati cards The rage 128 pros are the worst. But i was smart and got a Radeon 9200SE Dances. Get a good card. Waits for the money for the new computer.Be careful with used computers/laptops I have one and this computer is full of second hand parts. They are very unstable and back up everything on there trust me (I lost everything because of using older HDDs). Enough of me talking.
