What the fuck? How can you not know about the Chernobyl disaster?
People (in Sweden, aswell :P ) are still getting cancer from the incident, that occurred more than 20 years ago. It wasn't in Russia, t'was in Ukraine (Still the soviet union, but meh). What happened was a reactor suffered a steam explosion, resulting in a nuclear meltdown.
The meltdown produced a radioactive cloud which flew over Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, but also the European part of Turkey, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, France and the United Kingdom

Nuclear power isn't without it's hazards.

christ for the misinformed madcow, a nuclear powerplant does not explode in a 'nuclear explosion' like someome dropped an h-bomb in the middle of Prypiat, what happened was a fubarred test caused all the control rods (what regulate the reactors, er, reaction) to become stuck and inoperable, so the reaction increased exponentially till the reactor blew its top off in a steam explosion, this released the radioactive contaminents into the air as a massive jet of steam and the wind carried them over most of europe. Pryapit was not evacuated before it happened as the events leading to the explosion were within a few minutes iirc, the men were taken out the town and used to cleanup the mess, leading to horrendous radiation injuries/fatalities. Everyone else was evacuated by the KGB and the town was left desolate.

Nuclear plants are considerably safer than they were back then and I see them as the only real way of providing energy for future generations, you couldn't cover the UK in enough wind farms to compete with the kind of energy nuclear plants can provide. France gets most of its energy from nuclear fission and it hasnt blown up in a while. The main drawback is, as mentioned, nuclear waste, its nasty stuff and the only real way to deal with it is to bury it underground and forget about it, designing the grave they are put in to last for some 100,000 years.

I have some Ukrainian friends who moved because of that. Luckily, they were not affected by it.

pretty much everyone in europe was affected in some way by it, until recently we still had to watch sheep up in the north of the UK

The control rods were perculiarly designed, too, with the ends of a different metal, or something. I think it's an absolutely fascinating topic, albeit very sad.

Incidentally, to clear it up, Pripyat was a sort of model town for all the workers of the Chyornobl plant to live in, from what I remember.

I was just about to say that aswell.
Some sheep in the more Northern hills of Wales are still supposedly contaminated.
Here comes Alex smart ass reply about the Welsh and Sheep. ;D

And I agree with Alex, it is fascinating, I read or watch pretty much everything I get the chance to about Cherynobl or, to a lesser extent, other nuclear meltdowns.

There, you can see in the Northern tip of Wales.

Ya, it's 20 years after the Chernobyl disaster. Heres, what happens, when ya deal with crappy soviet reactors.. :

Lithuania has a nuclear power plant with similar reactors to the Chernobyl ones. EU is doing it's best (?) to shut down the power plant now. At first they've said, that it'll be totally shut down, although now - they're planning to shut down the old reactors and build a new one there.

The energy output of fission plants is like 1% of the actuall output of the fission reaction. It's like using 100 litres of fuel to dig out and process just 1 liter of the same fuel. It's simply not feasable enough to power the world for a long period of time: 1) the oceans will gradually become warmer, melting the polar ice caps or moving the Gulfstream, resulting in effects similar to those seen in "The Day After Tomorrow" (for the UK, atleast, I doubt the whole northern hemisphere will freeze) 2) we wont be able to take into account all the resulting waste and soon will have to launch orbiting around the planet (or hurl it into the Sun).

For the last 200 years we've "milked" the expanding gases technology more than enough. We should concentrate on something else, fusion seems like a good idea, since electricity is produced directly, without the help of steam turbines.
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-06 07:29:24 UTC Post #178662
I dont get your logic here, a fission plant produces a HUGE amount of energy so the fact its only 1% efficient means fuck all surely? Nuclear is considerably 'cleaner' than any co2 producing plant, the main byproduct is incredibly dangerous but it wont cause global warming. You can state fusion as 'the future' but without a stable way of producing a reaction its more sensible to think of what we can do now.

Please dont mention that film when talking about the environment, that was one of the worst crimes against cinemetography, even pearl harbour has nothing on that 'film'.

Hold on a minute, Lester Haines is the Reg guy. Oh yeah, they're... associated.

Oh no, the sun's mass would increase by 0.000000001%! I've always wondered why we don't throw more stuff into the sun...

atomise the trash with frequent nuclear explosions somewhere where noone gives a damn, say Iran

Let's send our trash into space... on the COLUMBIA space shuttle!

and about scandinavia being called "the droopy cock." I noticed that it DID look like one of those medical drawings of a cross-section of the male reproductive system. Norway's the weener, sweden and finland are the balls and prostate. Denmark is.. jizz i guess.

Hey, most Swede's didn't want to join the EMU (or even the EU), don't blame us for the cock-coins.

"affluence" not "effluence" hah. Richness, not effluvium.

UK is like the high school cheerleading squad captian that had fun in her youth screwing the football teams, but now, she looks back at it all with regret.

the UK is respected by the high school football teams for its personality and they like it as a friend, not because it has the biggest Norfolk in school
anyway, its Crumbria's are barely even sports-bra sized

England is a naughy place. So many counties ending in the word "sex." Tube stations named "Cockfosters" "shepherd's bush" and "St. John's Wood."

And for the record. Norfolk rules. (even though you preverts pronounce it "nor-fuck")

most american cities, towns, places are named after places in the uk, but with 'new' in front of the name btw

Dornt gert me starrted on norfack pronunciation, yarrrr, great yarmouth ftw

Nope, it will destroy nature with us all. There are so many nuclear reactors in this world, I think enough to send earth to a long nuclear winter.

"St. John's Wood."
Wow, I'd never realised how funny that one is. My great-aunt lives there.

I think some people here don't quite know the meaning of the term "meltdown".

When the chain reaction that accures inside the core losses control. That might happen because on of the 'control rods' that are in the core have broken.

The core's hull is brakes and the explotion spreads out side the core.

There's shit like that in Canada too, what are you trying to imply?

What do you expect really, considering North America was settled by Europeans and the British.

my point was that calling place names in the UK stupid is a fallacy because you get the same nonsense (quite literally the same names) in america too!

I saw more similar names than 'new' out west I agree, if you want to know my route and have a space minute or 5 hours, heres the log

"Herrmann."
"Albuquerque."

Key: The first two are fake, and the rest are not from Britain. Lol.
