I need some help finding good pics of structures
for the 2006 Map Compo. I've been searching, and searching.. but can't find nothing good.

So, post the pics here please, and thank-you.

What sort of structures are you referring to?
I have tons of information on the matter (from university), but I would have to scan them.
Just tell me the size and nature of your desired area, and I'll investigate a bit. :)

Edit: the more I learn, the more puzzled I am at the amount of unnecessary support beams people use in their maps! :D

lol..
ok, I have an example here:

Something like this.. Something in the open etc.
I tried this one but quickly lost interest... if you look at how the lower part of the concrete beams, you'll notice they move out.. When I did that, it caused an 'Invalid brush' So I redid it, but more carefully, never got the error, but in-game, I seen some cracks, so.. yea, I scraped it. :

I don't see the problem with the lower part of the concrete. How did you end up with invalid brushes?
A truncated spike with the sames sides as the cylinder would do the job well.
If you discarded this idea, what are you planning on doing now?

and

all it is, is a Half-cylinder with vm at the bottom.

ZL, I'd like something with more technologic reason.

Uh, Unbreakable; That looks like it's multiple brushes, and the lighting is really jiffy. Also, the choice of textures is hardly... stimulating.

I left unaltered spikes at both ends of the pillar. BSP.exe discards the part of the spike that is inside the half-cylinder. It still doesn't look perfect. By the way, none of it is func_walled.

ZL, yea, I did it with a whole brush, but all that changed was the crack position.

Kasperg, I'll give it a try.

Edit:

I did it and got a bunch of errors.. which I tried to fix, but it's not letting me.
This is why I ended this project.. And am looking for more pictures like it. Which can't find.

I don't see why you can't do that, if your making sure to vertex manip. correctly...

The best solution I see it a cylinder on top of another. Rotate by 12.5 degrees, then go to each vertex and snap them to the nearest grid. After making sure that they line up, should be no problem to then move the very bottom verticies by the same amount outwards. Consistance is key.

Also, I hate the spike tool, always gets nasty to do much else than use it the way it is.

If I have the time, I'll make an example map to show you exactly what I mean.

Nah, that won't be neccessary, I know what you mean, and thats what I do.. here:

You will notice the cracks.

what the heck, dude? just make a shorter cylinder and vertex-move the bottom to spread out... very simple.

It's how I made the capitals on these pillars.

Vertex scaling, guys =/

Alt-E with selections works wonders for these kinds of things.

did you try to line up a cone and clip the top off of it? i've done that and never got hell from the comiler or hl.

Yea, Rimrook's suggestion should work, since cones are built the same way as the cylinders, so there shouldn't be much trouble matching it. :)

Thanks guys, I got it as close as I can get it.. I took Nickelplates idea, I remember doing the same thing with a lighthouse I made.. but since it was only one solid cylinder, it did'nt give me probles, this one is still a little cracked between the two cylinders, but is hardly noticable.

Thanks for everyones help.. and as for the pics, well, never mind.. ;)
