Ok, so i majorly crapped up my comp (again ) , and corrupted ntfs.sys. so...

....booted with xp disk, and tried to do full repair (without console), which didn't work, as it couldnt repair / replace it. so I then tried to repair using the console...

...so using my limited console knowledge, i renamed the system32/...ntfs.sys to ntfs.old, which was fine. i then attempted to copy the new one from the disk to my hard-drive, but it just refuses to copy

ive also tried copying the ntfs.sys from another comp to a floppy, and copying from a floppy, but it just says "access denied", which it obviously isn't

Im using command:

copy D:i386ntfs.sys drive C:windowssystem32drivers

but this is just saying "not reconized" etc..

...tried goggling, but its quite a wide topic (cmd, etc...) so its useless, just hoping something with a bit more know-how could help

May not be the same problem but I got similar errors copying from a FAT32 to an NTFS drive.

What did you do to cause this? Err...I'd just reinstall, completly, cause when sys files are corrupt, I like to think that the best way to completly fix the problem is a fresh install...that might not be the only f**ked up file

I have an outboard USB drive I use to transfer large files from one comp to another. It came as FAT32. First time I tried to transfer from the new drive to my onboard drives, I got similar errors. Reformatted the outboard to NTFS to clear the problem.

Sounds silly, maybe, but you might try emailing yourself the file so it's not transferred from one type of drive to another.

So which is it saying? I don't think you can write to an NTFS partition lacking "write" permissions for everyone with the XP CD. Now, the 2000 Advanced Server boot CD will ignore NTFS permissions completely...

or a knoppix linux live distro, I always keep one around for when windows decides to kill itself

how in hell you corrupted ntfs.sys I dont know, sounds like a dead drive to me

if i just type copy D:i386... then it says access denied

but if i type copy D:i386... C:windows... then it says not recognized.

i know it is only the .sys file coz it was me that f**ked it up, but replacing it with another.

Haha Jobabob, I have one kicking around too...windows is a pain to keep running sometimes

alexb: you didn't answer my question... and why the hell did you decide to overwrite ntfs.sys? I'm geniunely interested.

mmm... well I overwrited due to some rather sensitive testing of an app im working on, which, errr... to put it simply... failed.

luckily, my comp backed up 2 days before!

ANYWAY, - - update:

i have mananged to replace it through console, but it still has same error. i think formatting is soon gonna be the only option
