ive read how to make them and i found out what they do, but is it essential to have them? my map has none, perhaps looks a bit drab, but other then that the textures all semm fine? Is it like some extra detail for lighting? Is it recommended for DM aswell?

yes. always use cubemaps. Your map wont calculate reflections without them!

And it's the only way to get correctly calculated lightmaps in game.
