As those who watch the GD know, I'm going to be getting my own computer soon and have been havin' trouble deciding b/w a notebook and a desktop and came for help. Well today I come with a different thirst for info.

I have made up my mind as to which processor company I'm going w/ regardless of the type of computer, AMD. However, a recently read a post on AMD Zone that AMD is rumored to be gearing up to switch their Alchemy line of notebook processors in for ones built on the x86 architecture. As I don't know which processors currently fall into this issue, I come asking the TWHL community.

Which of AMD's notebook processors are these, or more specifically, are their new Turion 64 X2's based on Alchemy?

Never heard of Alchemy. It does say "low-power", so I don't think they're talking about dual-core 64-bitters.

I'm sure the AMD site has all the codenames and product names connected in some way.

I'm posting again so as to show that I actually took the time to do some research at amd.com and found the answer.

The Alchemy line of processers are low-power b/c they are for PMPs, Portable Media Players. These are what they're rumored to be updating to the x86 arch.

My good computer went on the fritz the other day, mobo is dead, I am going to build a better computer, I will use AMD FX62 processor with 2gig ram and twin inline GT6600 graphics cards.

I hope that makes my gaming/mapping more fun

FX 62's arn't out, and pairing one with anything less then four 6600's would be stupid.

you mean a FX 60 and two 7900's? a X2 with dual 6600 - 7600's? or an FX57 with dual 6800 to 7800's?

I was told that the FX55 was better for gaming than the FX 57, also the GT6600 has better clock speeds and is good for the price. :)

@Garg: I got a 6200 and it runs HL2 on high just fine.

@alex: The highest i hear was like 700 fps off a 7800 (or dual, forgot which).

My 6600GT doesn't run HL2 on high (well, it does, just not very well). I'm guessing you have some relatively decent specs, Luke.

Youd think so, but i really dont.

1024 mbs of RAM, 2.4 Ghz CELERON (yes, its shitty), a 6200 128 mb PCI (no, its not a spelling mistake, its PCI) and a Soundblaster Live! 24 bit sound card.

I average 30 - 40 FPS on HL2 / all source games, and about 70 (it maxes out at exactly 70, might be a card setting) on 1.6 games.

Hey, no harm really. I've been tryin' to keep up-to-date w/ AMD developments b/c I'm gettin' a new comp soon and it's goin' to be a Turion 64 X2 notebook or a DIY desktop w/ an Athlon 64 X2 5000+, I still have yet to decide.
