...the NSA is pursuing its plans to tap the web, since phone logs have limited scope. They can only be used to build a very basic picture of someone's contact network, a process sometimes called "connecting the dots". Clusters of people in highly connected groups become apparent, as do people with few connections who appear to be the intermediaries between such groups. The idea is to see by how many links or "degrees" separate people from, say, a member of a blacklisted organisation.

By adding online social networking data to its phone analyses, the NSA could connect people at deeper levels, through shared activities, such as taking flying lessons. Typically, online social networking sites ask members to enter details of their immediate and extended circles of friends, whose blogs they might follow. People often list other facets of their personality including political, sexual, entertainment, media and sporting preferences too. Some go much further, and a few have lost their jobs by publicly describing drinking and drug-taking exploits. Young people have even been barred from the orthodox religious colleges that they are enrolled in for revealing online that they are gay.
The obvious question IS: How much of your life have your shared online?
I've shared quite a lot on IRC, forums and such, to the point where I've a Forest Gump type movies awaiting. Originally, I didn't give a fuck, but the idea of a foriegn nation's attempt at datamining everyone's internet lives alarms me, since I've given out my address too...

How secure are you?

[edit: In hindsight, I know this looks like a surrogate Jahzel post, but its important!]

well i ententered all my contact info for the FIOS tournament, but i dont really care at the moment, then again thats just the mind of a seventeen year old. my standing with my friends is cool and i dont have any secrets that i posted or said ANYWHERE that would ashame me

I've mentioned pretty all my personal information in IRC. Adress, full name, IP (evidently), date of birth and even phone number on occasion.

I don't like the idea of tracking people over the internet, but then again I can't see how it should be prevented. People should count on stuff they put on the net to be seen by everyone.

This is just wrong. Whoever thinks that it is right to do something like that can go take a fat one in the ass. We have humanly rights to those privacies.

Yeah, there is an element of openness on the Internet. I've pretty much done the things that Elof has done, and then some: Alex has my home address, and I have his. :P

Generally, I try and be cautious. It's probably the best way to do things.

I give out my address pretty freely. Seriously... if somebody wanted an address of a complete stranger, they could look in a phone book anyway.

You can also pay less than 20 dollars to companies that research this crap for you anyway.. Just give them a name and possibly where someone lives and then you can know ANYTHING about them.

God bless the Yellow Pages book...Hm we got Alex (1000000 times so I guess I'll phone each one until one of them says "Yes, this is Seventh speaking")

Hm well it's not like I can remember every pretty detail I've spilled but most people know my real name, the area I live in, my age and my hobbies...

I tend to not share my real life in case people use it against me...

I haven't really given much of my personal info.
Almost everyone knows my first name and I think, that I've posted my surname somewhere. I haven't given away my exact adress, or phone number. No photo either, since I don't have a webcam/digital camera.

Funny this should come up now. I just signed a full-time employment contract at a local School district (i was part-time before). In order to be officially hired, I have to get my fingerprints taken to make sure I don't have a criminal record. This is done electronically by a private contractor called Identix. A clause in Identix's agreement reads as follows:

Any information provided, communicated, posted or transmitted by you in connection with this web site ("User Information") shall be deemed non-confidential and non-proprietary information. Identix shall have no obligation with respect to such User Information. You agree to indemnify and hold Identix harmless for any and all User Information provided, communicated, posted or transmitted to or from this site.

that is from their website, but its the same thing when you submit information IRL too. Now why does my information go into the databases of a PRIVATE CORPORATION to be used as "non-confidential and non-proprietary" if all they are doing is checking for a criminal record? You'd think they could take ONLY my fingerprints and match it against the fingerprints they HAVE on record for anyone who DOES have a criminal record, and if they don't match, I don't have a record. But instead, they take my whole life story, and they get to keep it all... along with my prints!!!

Well, I caused a bunch of shite and told them that I was not going to give my fingerprints and social security and all the other stuff to a private corporation. They said that Identix is the ONLY way to submit fingerprints to the department of elementary and secondary education. I told them that I would have my fingerprints taken in INK by the local police department and sent in to DESE, FBI and Missouri Highway patrol. We'll see what goes on.

It just seemed like they are trying to FORCE everyone to be in an all-inclusive system. It may just seem like I'm being paranoid, but with all the NSA crap and the "patriot act," all they have to do is say "we think he's a terrorist," and you're effed! And there's no telling WHO can buy the Identix company along with it's databases in the future....

Good for you.

American workplaces seem disgusting. Do you really have endless medical examinations, drug tests, etc.? Seriously, they don't own you.

Yes, we do. I've had to take a few drug tests for job applications (failed one ;P) - The silly thing is that you can easily just use someone else's urine if it's a UA and drop a clean test. That's for most jobs, too...wanna work at an Amusement Park? Fast food restaurant? Gotta drug test first.

That's strange, I got a job in a fast food resturant just fine, didn't have to do anything special, except sign 3 forms.

Then again... I do live in Iowa.

Well, they told me I could have my fingerprints taken at the local police dept. but that after that I have to send them to Identix Corporation 666.
sigh I just may start a legal thing with this....

Yeah, UAs are a joke, my friend got a DUI a year or so back (even though he wasn't driving since he was out of gas :/) so I did his piss-tests for him so he could smoke pot all the time. 'cause that's what friends are for!

Drug tests depend on the job, I think, since my dad hasn't had any in 20-odd years and he works at a paper mill, a place where people can easily die. :P Maybe he just doesn't mention 'em, though.

Finally Nickelplate seems likeable.

And yes, I'm quite sure the US work-environment is quite a lot worse for the common employee than over here. No employment security, for instance. Here, you virtually can't be fired without a very valid reason, like showing up drunk for work like ten times in a row. Then again, our economy's going to hell with foreign out-sourcing and whatnot, but that's life.
