Hey, i have a cable router in my house that splits the internet to different ppl in my house (obviously). The problem is that it has an integrated firewall that i cant shut down temporarily (as far as i know) and therefore, I cannot host my own servers.

My question: Is there a way around this? Or is there a way that i can acces the router to shut off its firewall?

Type this into your URL bar: 192.168.1.1

username: admin
password: admin

there is a setting there, uncheck it, depending on your router type.

10.0.0.128 also didnt work :tired:
I have a Netgear Wireless Router.. i dont have the documentation for it, so im not sure exactly what model, if that affects it at all...

Also, i turned off the firewall on my comp (this is how i know that the router is the source of the problem)

I got the same problem... Even when I forward the ports =/
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-23 15:06:27 UTC Post #186567
Go to this site, go to forwarding, find your router, find what you need to port forward, and then follow the guide. I used this site to get my old server working.

lol... i just realized the version number was on the bottom of the wireless router itself... its WGR614v2...

I checked out your sites, pepper, and they found my router, but offered no way to punch thru it :tired:

I checked out your site, dandyli0n, and they had WGR614 and WGR614v5, but not v2... :'(

Also, how would i find the IP address of my Router? (im going to try the WGR614 and WGR614v5 just to see if they function the same) In order to do this port thing, i need the IP address to access the Router itself

Tried Ipconfig?

The "Default gateway" IP should be your router
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-23 19:04:22 UTC Post #186617
where would i find Ipconfig? in my internet browser? or would i use run?

Edit: i read up on PortForward, and set up everything, ignore the question above

Ok, so i followed the instructions for WGR614v2 without problems. I set port 500 to open up so i can use it as a server. The problem is that when i open up Source Dedicated Server, and enter in this UDP port (500 in this case) the server wont show up, as My friend and I determined. I cant even find the server anymore: it wont appear in the LAN tab OR the Internet tab. Watdafuxup wit DAT :x :x :x

Set it to open up port 27015 to the program hlserver and set it to work in both UDP and TCP.. That's what works for me. also, have the featured called DMZ and UPnP enabled.

Nah, I disagree UPnP is for the shucks. A high security risk. Keep it on only when you need to, i.e. after you've bought a new piece of software, so it can configure itself.

default for netgear is 192.168.1.2 i think?
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-24 14:43:07 UTC Post #186719
Well there is still no way I'm going to get a server up anyway because my brother has just informed me of a problem i cant work around: my internet connection:

He says that because we have a cable connection, hosting a server would not work well. He says that Cable connections have high band width for download, not upload (up to 1mbps vs 120kbps), and because a server has to do both, a T1 connection or better would be required.

And even if i Had a T1 or better, i wouldnt be able to join my server because running the Dedicated Server tool devotes the entire computer to running the server.

SO..... I guess ill have to settle for the servers already up :tired:

Um, who says you cant host with cable? Thats bull crap. You could join your own server with some lag depending on how many people.

I say get the server up, then see how it works. :)

When I host, its not wonderfully fast, but you dont need a T1. Damn its expensive. ooh, and it doesn't HAVE to be dedicated you know...

T1 is used for buildings/companies, multiple users, etc. Its not for recreational use.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-24 15:41:18 UTC Post #186731
i thought it had to b dedicated for it to go on the internet? if you use "Create server" then its only lan.... as far as i know :|

As for the T1, i guess youre right... there is no way in hell im gunna get my parents to get a T1 connection XD

hosting on anything but a dedicated line is a bad idea, too laggy for everyone

however as im sure someone has said your problem is obviously with NAT and not any firewall in place, the dg834g, similar to that netgear, comes with a very simple set of default rules - block everything incoming, allow everything outgoing.

so a machine will need to be designated as the server, assign it a static ip (you have to with basic NAT) and just tell the router to send all traffic on the ports specified for that game to that computer

or if you really care about security you'll always keep the machine fully patched and isolate it from the internal network via the routers firewall and set it up as a DMZ (de militarised zone), essentially this will mean that ALL ports are open to this pc so any incoming traffic is sent to it. Obviously this isnt a good idea for a pc you have anything important on as it does make it a hackers target.

yeah, job, i set port 27015 open to "hlserver" as grim had suggested, and allowed UDP and TCP to run through it. My brother is concerned about doing this, though, because running a server through a router will suck up it's band width, and it will bog up the internet access of all the other computers in the house.

I also dont have a sepparate computer to set up as a proxy server, so i still cant join any of my own games unless i set it to LAN, which i dont want
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-24 15:52:47 UTC Post #186735
Unless your brother is playing a game, your bandwidth should be fine.. and, when you use "create server", go into the consol of that game and type sv_lan 0. That will make it to where others can join AND you can play.. as of yet though, im unsure how to find the IP of your game without others telling you, after seeing it through the steam friends list.

Hurry up with that MSN rotator,

my brother is a hot-shot college student, going on to be a sophmore.

of course, we all know the "sophmore" means wise-fool... so what can you expect
