Ive been trying to map for source lately, but every time i compile a map its either pitch black or the character and weapon skin are completely black.

I get this error Error: Material "engine/occlusionproxy" uses unknown shader "Occlusion" i have a feeling its something to do with my graphics card. not sure though. Any help is appriecated. :]

Let's see, does the error happen every time you run your map or every time you run any source map?

Well, first, the thread title could have been a bit more descriptive. :)

Second, are you recieving this error in the console, or when you load the map?

Also, make sure you have lights in the map, otherwise (obviously) it will be pitch-black. In the cases where the room is lit, but the gun model is pure black, or pure brown (I've had cases where that's the issue), you can Alt-Tab out of the game and reenter and it will look like new again.

Kasperg-only when i try and compile my own source maps

RotatorSplint-ill keep that in mind for next time :P
and the error shows up in the console. but ill have to try the alt+tab idea thanks

btw i just noticed the camera in hammer doesnt work either arghhhh

The 3D camera doesnt work? Thats probably due to the recent update that Valve released. Simply click the camera tool (the little button to the left that looks like a big red camera :) ) and click somwhere in one of the 2D views.

If you have lights in the map with a high enough brightness value and its not lighting up then im stumped because I've never heard of such problem :zonked:

i do have lights on my map though, an there arent any leaks because its just a simple little box with a spotlight.

Use a light entity instead. And compile fully, that is usually caused by running the map in fullbright.
