Guys I need some serious help.

I lost a lot of files that I'd have a long, hard time finding/getting again. Can anyone tell me how to manually get back the files or a FREE program that I can use to get them back?

What do you mean by lost? Did you delete them or something?

Yes they were deleted, and unfortunutly, there is no way of recovering them. ZL gave me a link to PC Inspector File Recovery, and I spent the better part of the day trying to recover them, but w/ negligable success.

See, when I went to take the screen cap of my desktop for the Dektop Thread, I placed all my icons/folders/files in the recycling bin to clean it off. Unfortunutly, when I used the restore all button, not all was restored. I tried a system restore to get the files back, but it didn't work and only raised more questions. It keeped some of the files that had been created after the restore point, and it only recovered the folders and not their contents. I lost files I had created and accumulated, files that were hard to find and took weeks to get. After using the recovery tool ZL told me about, i discovered that 95% of the files were lost or corrupted.

Now I have to spend the next few weeks, dedicated to finding new copies of all those files...some of which I didn't remember the names cries.

try this. Works for me alot, however, some files may have parts that are gone alltogether, when the windows swap file overwrites free space. but give it a try. I once recovered a 650MB mpeg video. And its free to use.

Recovery programs work by scanning certain sectors in your drive that contain "deleted data". When you simply empty the recycle bins, Windows tells you that the file is gone and that there's space to write to: this is incorrect. The file is still there, but Windows has allowed other apps/whatever overwrite this data if the sector on the drive is called. So if you've overwritten the files, you won't be able to restore them.

System Restore is a useless hunk of crap. Let this be a lesson to:

1. Never work off the desktop
2. Work cleanly and smartly
3. Backup

Hah! My mum does something similar to that.... she stores files in the recycle bin that she isn't sure she wants / temp. files. Quite often she restores them as they are important. It's rather amusing!

You could just send your drive off to those sick perverts who scan your HD for porn, then recover your data.... and remove your bank balance.

Yeah...not willing to spend a chunk of change better spent on other things to get the files back. Hence, the manual work.

What exactly did you delete anyway? If it's hard to find, we might be able to help.

Not really. There were some low priority files (I think, can't remember) that I used for 1.6 mapping, which I stopped a couple of months ago. Also, 2 games, Torus Trooper (just got from GD) and I'm OK (a game from Thompsonsoft that was for the challenge that Jack Thompson coped out off), and some ahem adult content that was from a site that was allegedly closing down, but still hasn't.

whats the solution? DAILY BACKUPS, I can heartily recommend a number of backup solutions, if you dont use one your data is ever more likely to be lost every day you use your pc.

Perhaps...but I think just starting to remove things from my desktop, placing them deeper into the system, like My Documents, will help. Also, I plan to be alot more causious about anything I do from now on.

Google for Handy Recovery. You should still be able to get the older, free version.
