I decided to rerecord the video after having troubles with compressing it. This one is a whopping 17:33 minutes long and is 31MB unzipped.

Download part one here

Otherparts will be uploaded later on.

Feel free to post any comments/questions here regarding G-max and the video.

Note: a basic knowdledge of G-max is required to understand this tutorial.

wow, very well don Pepper. Although I prefer milkshape because of lagging purposes.. but its very clear your method of constructing it. Well done. :)

Glad you liked it, il do part 2 tommrow.

Anybody interested in UVmapping/texturing tutorials?

ya that would be great! I'm interested in how uv-mapping would be done too really irregular shapes.

Ya though, you inspired me to make a weapon, it'll be of course for a render.. seeing that I only got the silencer done, which is now 5220 triangles. :D

Yeah, that's me :) .

Unb, good looking silencer, but not for a game ;) . Isnt that a Heckler and Koch UMP?

Part 2 has been completed, looking for webspace to upload it(41MB).

The website also has been updated, the video can now directly be downloaded from the G-max page.

Are you sure there are no faces behind it? Maby try deleting it and redoing them.

I havent got the required webspace yet to upload part 2.

G-max, Milkshape, XSI pwns all of them!

Can you post some screenies of the RC-P90?

Do you use Z brush for UV mapping, or G-max's UV mapping software? Does Z-brush work with G-max? I find Z brush is SOO easy to work with UV mapping, espically with XSI.

does'nt seem like it.. if you want I can send you the .ms3d file and you can take a look at it. This is my first gun I'm modelling so yep. or I can export it to .obj.. probably be easier for you

That modeling unbreakable is..... well :( (the model itself is good, but the way you got there is not)

You shouldnt have a complicated mesh like that with a gun. Remember you dont want triangles. They cause weird lighting errors on the mesh, and when animated look horrible.

Polygon extrusion is the easiest way in my opinion. You can draw in points where you need, and extrude anything to get the shape of the gun, and get a low poly neat mesh too. xsibase.com is where you need to be!!! :P

Drawing linear for the side of the gun, then welding polys in is a HORRIBLE practice. So dont do it!! :) :)

Read about polygon extrusion and implement it in the model. You will find its quick, easy to work with, and you dont need to worry so much about the mesh's points converging with one another. :P

ok.. I seen that in Milkshape and was going to give it a try. But yep.. thanks.

btw: the model can be found here:

I also should mention the techniques I mentioned are universal throughout all modeling software. So even if you dont use XSI, its all good :)

Very nice video, I love "how I did this"-videos. They're often more educational than tutorials.
Makes me wanna get into modelling :).

Someone asked me how to do boolean in a other forum, little movie showing it step by step.

Boolean movie

wow. Milkshape does'nt have that option. We have to do it manually. :/

I know, you can actualy do a lot more with it, you could make the shape of the wing with a spline(drawing a line) and then let boolean create that shape on the fuselage so you get it all connected together and you can extrude it.

Glad you like it, il start on the UV one soon, that one is going to need some spoken audio to explain the use of some of the functions.

I would just trace the shape with a Isospline and have it auto-build the main shape. It would take 5 seconds, rather than box-modelling the whole thing.

'tis educational tho. :D

EDIT: After seeing it, I would check the vertexes you welded in case you trapped faces inside your model. Which results in extra polies.

Offcourse i could have done that too, but that wont really learn people boxmodeling, though its a good technique too.

Yeah, probably a poly or so left, though sometimes G-max deletes those, strangely enough.
