Hello guys, I want to apply for a job at our local technology center, but think I should include a portfolio for all my work with HL1, but don't know where to get started.

This thread is for the serious only, if you don't have anything useful to say, then don't say it.

Looking for some good pointers.

Outlines, lenght, etc.

Thanks

Well, what part of our work do you want to show them?

Well to start with...How about an Online Portfolio and a paper version.

Your website could be updated with images of your HL1 work and your paper version could be designed on Photoshop with pictures and information about them with a nice border style etc...

Well, I don't know to much about the company as of yet. I was just told about it yestaurday that they are always looking for people who enjoy creating games. All I know is they give training with there software and such. So mainly all my best screenshots of course along with wireframe images and such.. but I can't just have a folder in with pics.

For example, I'll need a cover page and stuff, but don't know what to type up...

Well... Powerpoint is manly used for this kind of stuff, same with .pdf and word files you know... Slapping them in the face with some huge jpg files or a rar folder wont impress them that much... I'd recomend a pdf or word document...

and for the cover page... Your name and signature?

And yeah, flash is sometimes used for this too.

You should probably send them the document in paper form, with all your referenses, experience, grades and all that. You could print the images and have them in the same documents, or you could give them a CD with that stuff along with the document.

A CD based Portfolio might do the trick, You could write those Video Clips you have of some of your Techniques to the CD, aswell as Screenshots and Video Clips of some of your best maps.

There are also copy places that will take .pdf's and doc's and print it with color photos for you.

Show a wireframe, flat, and textured version of each map, include the poly count, and show some pics of the textures used. Video is probably the most appealing so try that, you can always use fraps to record in-game stuff and don't worry about the fraps.com thing on the top.

Still images (prints) are a good thing. They can be dished out quickly. Also, make a contact card with all of you information so they can get back to you.

Also display any other talents that support this. Employers like to see flexibility, and as well if you can be flexible with the fast paced technology now-a-days, you can move around in the job-place a little bit. This is very essential, and it makes you look good.

With your video, grab a really catchy song, believe it or not, you can be remembered for it.

ultimately, stay cool. Don't spaz out. That's noobish.

Wireframe and flat images of your maps are completely and utterly useless. Use full-textured shots only.

Flat sounds useless. Wireframe could come in handu thoug... But I think textured is the most important one. People want to see result!

You'd only use wireframe if your map looks shit with textures. You're basically saying "Look! Lines! IT MUST BE COMPLEX!!"

flat shows brushwork skill

its good for that.

adding a wireframe and flat shaded minipic on the sides of the big pic is a plus.

If you're planning on faxing or sending a hard copy then it's acceptable (With fax, it's a necessity.) If it's in an online format (.doc, .pdf) then forget it.

Flat shows the lighting more clearly you nubs. Lighting is as important as the geometry itself!

I thought you meant like flat in hammer? FFS OMG WTF

there is a difference between flat and flat shaded.

flat is just the map with random colors instead of textures, which can look quite professional. Flat shaded is gray scale walls with lighting applied

yep, I'll need the commands for viewing flatshaded in game and whatnot.. I think i seen a tutorial here once discussing that.

Anyways, I think I got a pretty good chance after talking with an older friend about the job Im applying for. The companies name is C.G.I. Have you heard of it? Probably.

ATM there looking to employ up to 300 people all from Prince Edward Island, and theres clearly not that many gamers here.
Benefits include flying me to California for a 2 week training course, where a laptop, cellphone, place to stay, and a weekly pay will be given to me. Afterwards, I'll be earning $34,000 on a year. So I really need this to fall through.

So I was thinking about making a DVD to go with my portfolio. But seeing how I only get 2 fps I think I'll be using my dads laptop to record.

What I really need is some really high quality video editing software. That when viewed on a television, won't look terrible and pixelated.

Edit:
Just downloaded Pinnacle. I'll give that a try. Any other suggestions?

Also If I can't use my dads laptop, I'll need somebody with fraps to give me a hand for videos of some of my maps.
Habboi, would you be able to help me?

"Fall through" means "not happen" in England. How funny.
