ok I made videos, and want to compress them so I can burn them to a dvd, but I don't want to lose the quality.

Program used: Registered Fraps
Pixels: 1024x768
Size: 2.43G

Program I'd like to use to compress is Pinnacle Studio 8. But quality decreases.

Any help would be appreciated.

I was thinking about mpeg-4, but don't know of any editing programs.

Pinnacle is great for the ammount of options it has when you compress.. You can get near-full quality ones if you want.

but what would you save to...? AVI?

(btw, I have studio 9, not 8.)

i use 9 also, and i generally compress to AVI, since i'm not normally making stuff DVD quality, but i know you can.

so, what would you suggest for dvd quality? I know this question is a pain in the ass.. but...?

download virtualdub and XviD codec and compress using that.

i'm confused why you think he should do that when he already has an extremely powerful piece of video editing/encoding software.

IIRC Pinnacle can do DivX encoding. Go go!
.AVI isn't a real video format, btw, it's just a "placeholder" extension for lots of formats (including DivX and shiz).

1024x768 is huge for a video btw, drag it down to 400x300 or less. 640x480 at most.

but it needs to be a dvd.. and watching a video 640x480 on a tv, well, just no..

Of course you'll lose quality. You're scaling down from a 1024x768 video to whatever DVD size is, and then you're drawing it on a telly with 525 lines vertically (haha, NTSC). It's going to look a lot worse. Have you never noticed that the average PC monitor is vastly superior to the average telly?

You have me curious now. What does the DVD-Video spec. say about resolution?

The highest resolution you can make an NTSC DVD-Video is 720x480. Then you've got the crappy 525 lines on the actual telly, so it'll look crap, really.

ya thats exactly what I mean. So thats why I'm trying to figure out how I would go about making my dvd like any other dvd movie that I would download and burn.
Right now, the clearest I could get the video is 720x576, and the video size is 11.8Mib, I hardly loose quality at all, but can an .mpg file be burned as a DivX? This Video will be for my Portfolio, so I really need this whole thing sorted out.

Sorry, are you making a DivX data-DVD, or a traditional DVD-Video like you buy films on in shops? If the latter, you're going to have a 720x480 (720x576 is the Superior British format :D) MPEG video being shown on, I imagine, a 525-line telly, unless you plan to show it on laptops, in which case, look into Smack and BINK or whatever that stuff is called that VALVe use for trailers.

Most Newer dvd players can play DivX data-DVD's though. And the tech center has the newest of everything. ...Example... Your PC password is changed every 30mins, and the only way to obtain your password, is a fingerprint scanner, so I don't think old dvd players would be the case at the place I'm applying for a job.

There are literally hundreds of tutorials on the internets on this subject.

Recently upgraded to latest version of Nero 7 Premium.

It works wonders for creating DVDs of the files on my computer. Im sure you can do a decent compression/burn through it.

wow, what a great program. It has plenty of neat text effects and transitions. One question though, will it compress the video before it burns?
