I use FileZilla (there's both FileZilla Server and FileZilla Client - get them both while you're at it) which is easy as hell to use and works very well. Should be real easy to set up.

Apache is a HTTP-server, not FTP. Different protocols. I run both, as seen on http://zldb.net and ftp://zldb.net. I'd recommend Apache - better user interface for the people downloading - however, if you want people to be able to upload stuff, you need FTP (or some PHP script on HTTP).
