Ant, you're a dick! :D

Apple are just one big friendly marketing company who try to side with consumers on everything. It all seems like a publicity stunt to me. Does anyone really think Apple gives a flying fuck?

I can't wait until they release DRM-free 320Kbps AAC files for 1.99. They'll explain away the price hike as the privledge of not being saddled with DRM and "owning" a "high quality" compressed file and the same suckers will go out and rebuy their music in a file format that's still compressed and has their name plastered all over it. That's right, the digital watermaking part of Fairplay is still there.

It's splendid news. Stupidly expensive, though. ?1 per track? I could buy the proper CD for less than it'd cost on iTunes.

And on a CD you actually get good-quality stuff, not badly compressed MP3s.

What I found interesting was hearing Jobs talk about DRM on movies and how he has no plans to lobby it's removal. His main reason was that the music industry already sells music DRM-free on a wide scale so it is only natural to bring that to the internet. The situation with the film industry is very different, all DVD's are infested with CSS and many other types of copy-prevention systems.

Does anyone know how to play a DVD in Windows XP with Windows Media Player 11? Despite the new look of 11 and integration of shitty subscription store, WMP still can't play DVDs! Surely there has to be a way to play DVDs on a home computer. My 2nd gen region-free DVD player works fine but I have to un-plug the cable box to use the only avaliable component video ports for progressive scan.

How about getting a decent media player like VLC or my personal favourite Media Player Classic (has nothing to do with Windows Media Player)? And why on earth did you get WMP11? From what I've heard, the only new "additions" since previous versions is a shinier UI and heavier DRM. Microsoft... gawd, they're really going down the shitter recently.

Dave, are you trying to look stupid or were just born like that?

First, it came in an automatic update. Second, WMP is just there. It's convinient and just two clicks away from anywhere in Windows. Do you know how to play DVDs in WMP 11 or not?

I play DVDs just fine in WMP11. I prefer VLC for it though.

Here's the secret: Insert disc, press play.

It comes up with an error asking for decrpyting software.

Er.. get some proper codecs?

Or just go VLC, problem solved. It's a small program too, don't take up much space.

Yeah, but I bet the mp3's are all chart/pop bollocks

For the love of god, people, turn off automatic updates if you want to keep your music...

Where do I get these codecs?
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-05 09:41:54 UTC Post #218080
Find a free DVD codec. I'd start with Google.

WMP 11 is shit. All that fuss for absolutely nothing.

I downloaded and installed the K-lite codec but trying to play a DVD comes up with another error.

"Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings."

Shitty graphics card?
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-05 11:17:01 UTC Post #218091
It's a Geforce4 MX 440, shit, but it's played DVDs perfectly before. My desktop resolution is 1280 x 1024, but it shouldn't make a difference.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-05 11:29:37 UTC Post #218093
I had that same card a few years back, and yes, it should be able to play DVD's just fine. I ran that resolution too.

Again, try another program, at least you'll know if it's your card's fault or (more likely) WMP's.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Ant here. M$ have hyped up a lot of their products in the last two years and to be honest they've simply put a mediocre amount of effort into lots of products rather than a real effort for a smaller quantity of projects.

Bottom line: they're just a big crap PR machine that fails at even building up enough PR. If Microsoft were successful they'd basically be like Apple, not that Apple is a good company. Just better.

Back on topic, yeah, just install more codecs and shit 'till it works :P
