Science is not a "higher power", nor is it a belief system. It's a process of acquiring knowledge through the scientific method. Logic, rationality, etc. It's not religion. Furthermore, people who "believe in science" don't swear by it like religious belief - they're not guided through life by their belief - they don't use it as a moral guideline - and maybe most importantly, non-religious people accept the fact that they might be wrong.

Some people aren't given a choice about religion. For some, there is no way out. Some are even indoctrinated at an early age when their brain is still in early stages of development.

I think when Tosse brought up how religious people have a better chance of survival, he was talking about how they either accept their fate or believe that their higher power will heal them. And that kind of positive attitude has, in fact, been proven to increase the survival rate in patients.

I agree with WC.. Its a placebo effect of sorts... It's not the religion, it's the placed faith in religion making you have a positive attitude. Then the positive attitude is what makes you better, even if there isn't a proved cause, there is a proved increase in 'healing'

While science is largely incompatible with religion, since it attempts to explain things in a logical manner, there's really no reason for anybody to hate it altogether. We quite obviously wouldn't have gotten this far in society without it...

By the way, anybody know where Scientology got its name? None of its beliefs appear to be based on science at all... more like bad science fiction movies.

All Im saying is that we pay way too much attention to science, when it's scientificly (did I spell that right?) proven that scientists are wrong most of the time, that one bends my head everytime I say it... Just look at the rainbow, the stars or the rain, those would be quite the fucking deal if we didn't know what it was. And yes, science is sort of a religion, there are people who stick to it's every word like it's a religion, and seem to feel really good about themself when they say that there is no God.

I do belive in God and in Jesus. But as I said before in another thread, I don't care if it's fake or if it's reality, I belive in something good, something that is greater that all of us, and that makes me feel good about stuff. Religion is helping so many people, making them stronger and feel better about themselfs, and that's real enough for me. But it's also used for a lot of horrible stuff, but that stuff would have been carried out in the name of something else if religion wasn't here. So everybody, just try to keep an open mind about everything. We have no definitive facts, everything we know can be proven wrong with a new pice of technoligy, so just relax.

Taking religion for fully granted is stupid. So is taking science for fully granted. I believe, that you can't just say "there is no God" nor "he / it is here and guides us all". Thats because, you just don't know. There is still so many things, that we don't know, and many things, that we will never find out, IMO. As said above, believeing if you're sick, or if you have a serious illness, helps you. But what it really is, nobody can tell for sure. But it does work. Even if someone doesn't believe in God, and is a realist: it's science, that tells us, that we are only using a small percent of our actual brain capacity. Who knows what that is? It may be there for some telephatic or self-hypnotising use, what we don't know how to fully use yet (What Jose Silva's Mind Control is all about) or...for contacting God

People may follow science like lost puppies, but that's because it can be tested and proven or have theories formed upon it. Religion can't be 'tested' (like ascending into Heaven n stuff), and so while I'm primarily a 'science-follower,' I'm still open to the possibility of some supreme creator.

I can't understand why people form such extreme views on these matters. :

Science does not have separate belief systems, and many scientists come up with theories that contradict others, so I'm not sure how you could follow science as a whole like a religion... rather you can take what you want and leave the rest. Science is NOT religion and I have personally never heard of anybody accepting it as such.
