Idk if anyone has heard of Nexiuz. It uses the quake3 engine and the map files are .maps and the levels are .bsps

Basically i was wondering if it were possible to set up hammer to make Nexiuz maps. I'm stumbling my way thru learning GTKRadient and i would MUCH rather use hammer.

Is it possible to map for Quake3 using hammer?

Should be, and if so, how?

I can very VERY strongly assure you that there isn't a way. Hammer isn't a versatile editor that only needs plugins to accept other engines. No, you can't use Hammer to map for the Quake 3 engine. In fact, you can't even use it to map for Quake or Quake 2 engines. Except for the Quake engine, they use entirely different technologies.

I was afraid of that.
that's depressing because radiant blows hardcore...

Anyone else have any input?

Yes, I do. At least, if you're talking about Hammer 3.4 and 3.5, where it wouldn't even begin to accept the new features that the Quake 3 engine offers. I'd say the same thing for Source's Hammer, but since I know little about it, I can't say it with much authority.

True that. How about if i just switch the compile tools, and get a different fgd?

It just seems to me like it SHOULD work. I dunno. I'm just a hopeless optimist when it comes to crap like this.

No, it doesn't seem like it would work to me. At all. Not if you really understand how different these game engines are from each other, and how specific Hammer is to the engine it was built for. Theoretically, it would compile fine, but you could edit Quake 3 maps about as much as you could a Bioshock map: none at all.

I really dont understand why it's so different.

If you think it'll work, why don't you just try it? I know it couldn't possibly work, but if you think I'm wrong, just load it up and see what happens. It'll probably just crash when it tries to open the RMF. Does Quake 3 even use RMFs?

uses .maps

As far as I know, Hammer doesn't store any texture information in .map files, so I don't know how the Quake3 textures would work.

Just give it a try.

RMFs are used only for Hammer, they're converted to .map before being given to the compiler. Mapping for Quake 3 with Hammer might actually work if it wasn't for that fact that Q3 doesn't use WADs for its textures (right?), and that the MAP format used by Q3 probably differs from that generated by Hammer.

Hammer MAP files store the WADs used and the name and coordinates of the texture on each face. Just open one up in a text editor and take a look.

i tried this with Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy which uses the Q3 engine. After much baldness gained from ripping out hair in exasporation, i ruled that it'd be easier to learn GTKRadient.. and it was.. and now i can map with another editor.. Worth learning.

If you need any help, PM me

I had a game called Nox that used .Map files. I tried opening one in Hammer and it crashed windows.

just because it has the same extension doesn't mean the stuff in the file itself is the right format for hammer to use and function, let alone the compiling part. :zonked:
