If i get a brand new, really nice specs gameing computer...
will it make compileing maps for source shorter ? i have this problem, i had a problem with putting too many props in one map, now it doesnt slow down my game just the compieing, now at first i didn't mind it was a few extra minutes but its just ridculous ! its takes OVER 15 min for ONE map for half-life 2, and thats IF it doesnt freeze in the middle (which it did before) but now it TOTALLY FREEZES up.

Anyway sorry for making it so long, but do you guys think if i get a new computer ( im useing a laptop right now ) it will compile faster ? thanks

Well yeah ofc, the better your system the more cpu hammer gets, = better performance.

Hammer absolutely loves quad cores. 100% CPU usage on all cores, plus you have the option to disable one core so you can continue using windows. Not many apps make full use of quadcores. Games generally don't care much for CPUs, they benefit most from graphics cards, so a good dual core would be great for games and cost less, but won't compile HL maps as fast.

If you're planning on getting a new computer and don't mind spending a few more bucks for high performance, then don't forget to buy a 60GB SSD for the OS ;).

ASUS EAH4870. It overheats easily and has driver problems. Wouldn't recommend it.

I've had an ATi 4870 for about 2 years now. It's very good, pretty much maxes GTA4, and Crysis at 1680x1050. I would reccommend you also download MSI afterburner so you can set up a custom fan-speed profile, so the hotter it gets the faster the fan spins, so you can keep it cool. Anything better seems really expensive.

ATI Radeon HD 5770. Not sure what Windows performance is like yet though.

Did no one mention that fifteen minutes is absolutely nothing for a compile time??

That's the same one I had before buying Ati Radeon HD4850 :). I still have it in its original box.

For hl1 it is. For source it isn't. But I think it just depends on the map layout really. I can compile my huge gmod map in about 10 minutes. I didn't make the skybox tall yet though :D.
It varies anyway... when I compiled gm_beachplay, it took 11 hours, and it's source :).

He said Half-Life 2. Longest I've had was about sixteen-seventeen hours.

Use Nem's Batch Compiler at the very least: it allows you to free up resources because you can close Hammer. I've also noticed that it's a lot easier to keep an eye on it since it doesn't freeze up Hammer like the normal compile window tends to do.

15 minutes is indeed absolutely nothing for a compile.

Striker it was somewhere between sixteen and seventeen hours. And I got into the habit of compiling overnight while I slept. Didn't have to explain anything because I bought my own machine.

dude seriously ??
how did you it didn't freeze or something ? cause when i compile it, it gets stuck on one number (portals or something? ) and it doesnt move from there ... but i dont know i guess 15 min so doesnt exaclty compare fairly to sixteen hours...

Don't click the compile window or anything inside Hammer while it is compiling. This almost guarantees a crash.

Or try the Batch Compiler.

Interpretation: 16 + 17 hours.

Also what if it says ( not responding ) in the window ? should i cancel it out and start over, or should i keep going on ?
Posted 14 years ago2010-09-06 19:01:43 UTC Post #285140
Just leave it as is and it should go away.

It always says "not responding", don't worry about it. If you really want to know if it's responding, open the Task Manager and check that vvis or vrad are using most or all of your CPU power. if they are, it's good.

Really, i couldnt get it to work.

Also does half-life 2 ep2 compile differently thant half-life 2 ? like maybe take longer to compile ? or is it kinda the same ?
Posted 14 years ago2010-09-07 23:19:05 UTC Post #285195
it is the same.

Check your map for leaks.

Other than that, comile with fast vis fast rad and don't click anything at all while it's going. If it stops on a number just let it be, it's probably not frozen.

My last couple guesses.
