I know this has probably been discussed before, but f**k I hate the search on this site. No offence, I just can't use it effectively.

A certain someone I know has been having trouble. She can turn on her computer and shut it down fine, but she cannot open any programs (or so I have been informed). I realise this is almost definitely a virus, but as a noob to the subject, what would be the best way to tackle this issue?

She should see if the same thing happens in failsafe mode.
If it does, then she ought to format. if it doesn't, try running an AV scan in failsafe, and if that's not it then hell why not try to reinstall all of the drivers it's worth a try.
