we should have a minecraft thread in General discussion ^_^
Thank you, Blitz. So, anyways, I have been playing on a fun build server that gives you build rights whenever you see an admin or owner. game.korn8.dk I worked with the owner on Aperture Science, but then i started making Black Mesa.

I've been building a giant Bender head for a while now. Over 10k stone blocks used so far. No cheats/editors were used in acquiring the materials, or building the actual thing. Gonna turn it into a massive HQ base when I have the time.

A few outdated progress shots:

The visor is finished at its current state, along with the top being covered in stone half-blocks to prevent mob spawning. Also, most of the water underneath the head has been drained. I'll try and get a shot of those once our server goes back up.

Building on ice saved me a great deal of time as far as dealing with mobs goes, even though the water draining is taking absolutely forever to finish.

It's pretty massive, and I'm not too sure how to use up all the space inside (what is basically a 49x49x64 cylinder), but I have some fairly epic stuff planned for it. :crowbar:

That's awesome, Daub.

Yeah, there are tons of YouTube video in wich people show off massive structures made in Minecraft. Very impressive stuff.

There already WAS a Minecraft thread. Look three pages back in General discussion, it's even titled the same.

SnC server had a different world every month, for its 3 month lifespan.
You can see the popularity peaked in world 2, and by world 3 there were only 4 or so regulars, which is why the server will discontinue at the end of the current billing cycle (July 7th)

I was in a minecraft server and I found this kind of massive bay of sand filled with water right next to the sea, and this bay was surrounded by mountains, so I decided to make this bay a port and create a massive kingdom on top of the mountains, and I had already created several towers but then the plebs reset the server without saving anything, so I lost it all.

So let me make this abundantly clear.

I've got about €70, but I need to get something big. Maybe if I have some money left over afterwards I can get it soon.

What's the part that has to be paid for? The client, or the right to access the official server?

Can I play in your server without buying something?
Posted 13 years ago2011-06-21 19:09:49 UTC Post #295738
DiscoStu, it can be played across Hamachi. Only you just have the feeling of being too... private. Isolated. You must advertise it in order to get players( never did this, played it with friends).

Sure, it's nicer if you have money to buy it. I won't afford it until Christmas though.

Or you could host your own server.
Posted 13 years ago2011-06-21 19:40:54 UTC Post #295740
The game itself costs money. It's a one-off purchase, and there are no subscription fees.
If you want professional hosting of a server, it will cost quite a lot, though. MC servers require a lot of RAM, so they cost more than standard game servers.

What I'm asking is what are the Minecraft guys billing for. They're asking for money and let you download the client files in return, or you can just download everything and only need to pay if you want to play in the official servers?

I'm asking because I have only ever played the free java version on their site.
Posted 13 years ago2011-06-21 20:02:06 UTC Post #295742
You can download the client but it'd be useless, what you really pay for is an account, when you open the client you have to login to play.

Upon further inspection, i turned out that there really was no pit as my friend could'nt see it, for him it was just a small grassy hill which is what was really there.
That's why he magically floats above the pit.

There are no official Minecraft servers to play on to my knowledge. Your purchase gets you the full version of Minecraft and access to future updates.

Missing Chunks, the map loads in squares called chunks and occasionally one of them won't load properly creating a massive hole. It's more common in MP but rarely happens in SP too.
Posted 13 years ago2011-06-23 01:40:39 UTC Post #295762
I'd totally dig that pit. Only in a multiplayer game though, it would be a complete waste if nobody were there to ever see it.
Posted 13 years ago2011-06-23 02:49:19 UTC Post #295763
I'm working on something like that.

I'm strip mining one map straight down to the adminium w/ a series of floating islands connected by railroads.

It's a LOOOOOOOOOONG process.

I'm mainly playing a new map using the Millénaire mod, which creates villages that u can trade with and help them build up.

@Atom: It's a chunk load error. They're bound to happen more often the further you go from your spawn location. Reloading/reconnecting solves it.

With the money I'd spend on minecraft I could(single possibilities, not all included):

#buy 31,5 icescreams of my favorite flavour
#consume about 200 kilowatts of electric power
#repair my front bicycle wheel
#buy myself a pair of sport shoes
#buy a gym subscription
#buy about 25 beers(in cans)
#buy ~20 kg of potatoes
#go to a restaurant and have a nice meal
#go to a thermal spa
#buy a desk fan
.... and so many more.

Still, I want this game so much :/ ....

It can be rather addictive. I find myself playing it more than the $60 retail games I buy.

@DiscoStu: Making that in the free build version is nothing. You just have to click on a block and it's gone. It takes REAL dedication to do that in the full version, when destroying a block can take up to a couple of seconds each.
