Everyone loves a basemap, why not run a basemap minicompo?

They are fast and fun to make, and knowing you don't have to add much fine detail to the map makes it that much easier to join in.

The winner's map could be made into an official TWHL basemap compo, OR perhaps any the entries to the minicompo could be chosen to enter in the official contest.

If you wanted to go crazy, each basemap entry could then be used for a subsequent minicompo. Just spitballing here; there are a lot of directions we could take this, also with prizes and whatnot..

Would anyone else be interested in something like this?

Note
I would also recommend Vanilla HL entries only for simplicity, fairness, and ease to link them all together for a mappack/preview(ala cubicles).

My next mapping endeavor will probably be a multi player map for next time someone hosts a server. So I probably won't be participating.

Maybe keep the next mini competition extremely simple, like map a prefab for a bounce pad or something.

A prefab/prop minicompo WOULD be fun, mabye select a theme like military, and anything from that theme is fair game? :)

I probably won't be participating, but I certainly like the idea.

I wonder what would happen if the base map was not a room, but a weird random shape of brushwork instead. A "Make something out of this chunk of brushes" minicompo?

Hm, do you mean like random bits of suspended brushwork and a map has to be built from that?

I like that idea too Rimmeh, the more abstract the better for me. Also where/when is the party I'd like to RSVP :)

lol omg yes

not what I was thinking but it's even better. This reminds me of improvised prop comedy, only it's mapping, and funnier.

Does it go without saying that we can move, rotate, and scale the base?

^ I was thinking more random brushes myself, but this would work too :)

Can someone create a competition topic for this? :)
Also we could add a price. I would pay 20€ if other would join this we could make a sweet price.
@ Rimrook:
Yes you can move the Base, scaling it too or rotate :) You can do a lot of wild stuff there hehe.

Also you can adjust the high ( to make it a 1-2-3 floor, or you copy paste it to have a second floor and add new paths to it to connect.

Also I was thinking about + 10 Extra Textures, if you miss something from another wad feel free to use up to 10 Extra Textures. ( Not Wads )
Models,Sounds,Skytexture,Sprites can be custom, no Limit.

Atm I work on a HL-DM map with this. Quake Textures fit perfectly for this hehe.

Wpolys / Epoly dont care really the limit is your compiler ;)
But if the wpolys are toooo high and it lags, the rating can be worse.

Maybe you should do it Trempler, since it's your basemap?
btw, here is a pic of the basemap:

I'm not sure about the entry fee, but it's an interesting idea. Obviously have community voting select the winner(s), so everyone can join in, and I would recommend HL1 only for a level playing field.

Either way, I'm definitely in for this :)

I think perhaps he meant a prize CT.
An entrance fee that goes towards the prize would be interesting, except for two things. One, the level of uptake isn't high enough for the prize to be very big. Either the entry fee is small, but the prize is small enough that people aren't interested, or the prize is large but the entry fee is large enough that it prevents people from joining.
Secondly, I don't have any money so I wouldn't be able to join. :P

Perhaps if it were a full compo with multiple judges and a deadline and a news post it might work, but for a minicompo it probably wouldn't.

Also, what limitations would there be on that map with regard to the original brushwork? Could the straights be made slightly curved, so long as they maintain the general layout? Could corners be made sharper? Could the different brushes be moved vertically so it isn't all on the same plane? Or is it more like you can do whatever you want so long as the shape of those original brushes is unchanged?
It's looking like I won't have any free time this week to finish my Haunted minicompo entry, but the assignment I'm working on is due on Friday so after that I will have free time for this one.

I think most people will be in your boat about the entry fee TJB, though one day we should try it. Also Trempler, those textures are gonna work nicely ;)

Anyone feel free to start the competition topic, or I can do it. Here's a preliminary brief if we do this:

Basemap Minicompo #1

By Trempler

Rules
1. Build something based on Trempler's basemap.
2. You may alter the original basemap brushwork as you see fit, while always trying to keep the essence of the original shape.
3. Engine is GS Half-life. Use the 2 included WADs, plus 10 extra textures of your choice. Models, sounds, sky, sprites can be custom.
4. Judged by community voting.
5. Deadline?
6. Prizes?
