Nothing surprising, valve implemented the tools to make this possible a long time ago. As a post on that thread explains.
Since a server is essentially a master for clients, sending files is quite easy. If you can reverse engineer software you can find how to craft a custom file that the client executes and infects its host system.
In any case a client-server system that can send files (models, maps etc...) is a security vulnerability.

It's either this or having a single central server farm owned by Valve, and we all know how that goes after a few years, as has been demonstrated by plenty of game companies discontinuing a multiplayer service and leaving everyone out.
It's too much asking for some people out there but if you use your judgement and common sense you should be alright.

if u want complete virtual security, throw your PC and phone out of your window, hoping not to kill some poor cat. Same happens in HL1, the secret is in your ability to tell which servers are shitty, they usually stink
