Jahzel, the American flag is just symbolic. It represents our nation. What they mean when they say "We fought and died for that flag!", is that they fought and died for our nation, and our freedom. They really don't accually care about a piece of sheet with colors.
I personally have burned an American flag. It is respectful to our nation to burn an American flag if it gets dirty, after seperating the stars from the stripes first.

All that crap isnt patriotism anyways. Its pomp and ceremony. Flag waving and rituals are NOT patriotic. DOING something good for your country is (which quite often goes against the government). But of course, whoever sits in the big chair, gets to call anyone who questions him 'unpatriotic'.
