[22:10:19] <RichT> Okay, how about this. A channel for the mapping, a channel for everything else?
Sounds good to me. There's no room for general chit-chat in #twhl, since the conversation is frequently being rudely interupted by actual mapping questions. :P

The regulars need a seperate channel to talk crap in, and this also should be in some way official, rather than some kind of break away faction, ruled by idiots. :)

If an official channel for regulars were set up I would be much obliged.

I think it's a good idea. That way, everyone has a place to talk about anything but general mapping questions can still be anwsered easily.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-18 17:36:12 UTC Post #67414
Hopefully the same ppl who run #twhl at the moment. I thought that was kind of clear?

I agree, then we will be able to flame each other and not disrupt the light-hearted! :P

If not Skeeve can do it / has time, ask seventh or anthony, both fairly regular (not as regular as me hum) and good men.

I've suggested this several times, last at about nine last night, UK. Guess you were too busy talking about dogs.

I'll do it sometime today.

#twhlregs it'll be, but please also remain in the proper channel for mapping discussion and people who want help - that's what we have a channel for at all!

Sure. I'd stay in the original #twhl as well as teh new one.

#twhlregs sounds kinda corny. Anyways.

I think to stop stupid spammers, the channel should be password protected, and the password should only be distributed to those who aren't idiots and who ask politely for it in normal #twhl.

Erm, trapt, this is gunna be th' stupid channel. Sensible non-mapping discussions can still go on in #twhl, but no animals, etc.

So I can keep my op for both channels? :P

Who is this Marvin character? Is he Ethiopian by any chance?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-19 07:35:24 UTC Post #67512
Well, i think that starting a new area for regulars is not that great of an idea, because...

beginners are still going to be directed here, and all the regulars that know alot about twhl will rarely visit here leaving beginners questions unanwsered....

besides Define: Regulars

Unbreakable, thats not true. Regulars can just as easily idle in the #twhl channel only speaking to ask & answer questions about Half-life mapping. Most people sit in three or four channels at a time anyways,. Anyone could join the "regulars" channel, it wouldnt be elitist. It would just have a more light hearted nature. The same conduct expecting in #twhl would be expected in there too.

Its the way it should be. And Seventh, I did see your suggestion for the channel last night, but noticed that mop was occupying/squatting in it. DON'T call it the stupid channel, I dont want to sit in a channel full of idiots 24/7. Actual conversations should happen there too!
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-19 08:06:01 UTC Post #67534
Define: Regulars
Which is why it should be Password protected. That way only the regulars would get in, since only they know the password. Otherwise it will eventually become just like the normal one is like now, with mappers asking questions in there because they would probably get more attention in the new one.

With the new addition to code, you have a little click on link, taht only becomes avaliable after you;ve made liek 100 logins, how's that?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-19 08:19:05 UTC Post #67545
100 logins isn't a good indication IMO.
AJ AJGlorious Overlord
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-19 08:22:48 UTC Post #67546
ok, 300 then, any amount so long as I get in haha

But what;s your suggestion, don't shoot things out teh air without giving an idea back, or we'll end up in a dead end, I can't think of any way to decide whether a member is regular enough, not with teh mods doing more than their job entitles, and marking off ppl who shld be allowed in.

Maybe something drastic liek 1000 logins, but that just means the channel would be empty for the most part.

I really don't know a fair way of doing it, perhaps a different password posted on the news page each day, or once a week, just so ppl have to check teh main page to find it, or a seperate page, taht you have to check to get it, just so that people have to do a little more work.

Or Or or lol, best idea ev4r!!1:

we release a map once a week, that you have to play through to get the password at teh end haha, that's so aweosme I should get a medal for that shizzle!

No, just a standard map that get's a new password texture at the end of it once a week, just recompile and add more monsters :P

I like the idea anyway, seems liek a fair way of deciding who gets in.

Mega-logins aren't an indication of jack, except exceptional spamming techniques.

dajuppi: that's exactly the kind of thing I want to keep out of the official TWHL channel.

Stop seeing #twhlregs as a bad thing! As Mephs pointed out, the normal #twhl may still be opened up and questions answered :D

Here are the benefits of #twhlregs:

1. Authenticity -- As the conservatives tried to put it (j/k)
2. No spam in #twhl
3. No distractions in #twhl
4. Off topic discussion, much like this 'stuff' forum
5. No annoyances in #twhl
6. Arguments if necessary carried out in #twhlregs, allowing #twhl to be free of insult
7. #twhl becomes idiot-proof
8. Banned members may still communicate, but risk being banned in #twhlregs if taking things a little too far
9. Pig-sucking and dog-beating will not interfere with #twhl
10. No-one can be cheeky to Marvin, Seventh, or any other mod in #twhl

The benefits will be great for the future of #twhl, no-one gets upset, the cannel becomes clean, genuine questions can be answered without interference, and all will be fine.

I think that there is not much point in having a password to get in #twhlregs, but, then again outside parties may see #twhlregs as an opportunity to fight in or challenge twhl members in #twhlregs, which could be a bad thing if left too it's own devices. : Too be honest, I'm not sure.

to*

Yeah, I agree with you, it's hard to say who and when people should be allowed to join, I mean, why should you or I be allowed to join it?

I see no fair way of doing it, except by a method of banning people and then all the reg;s who don't get banned for stupidity are the survivors, a bit elitist (kinda) but maybe teh only truly fair way, give everyone a chance, then ban like crazy!
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-19 10:29:04 UTC Post #67601
I think off-topic discussion and debate should be raised only in #twhlregs.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-19 10:36:26 UTC Post #67605
Of course, no mapping q's, all q's should be directed to #twhl, and all spam to #twhlregs

I suggest having a op who doesn't have a life, sits on irc all day and rarely sleeps.

"chit-chat" Does that include pig-jokes ?
Dajuppi, if it doesn't include dubious URL posting, it doesn't include pig jokes, deal? ;)

It's pretty ironic that I initially missed Seventh-Monkeys suggestion about a seperate channel while talking crap, eh? A little sad also...
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-19 11:23:00 UTC Post #67623
I'm glad other people share the view I was trying to get across. I wasn't trying to be a asshole last night, but a mapping help channel should be just that. Not a place for people to discuss dog molestation.

I agree with Jahzel about regulars. It's nothing to do with login count. It's if you post regularly, visit the site regularly etc. And if Seventh has failed (ie: can't be bothered) to set up the channel, I'll be more than willing to set one up for you. I'll set the admins to be the same as on #twhl, plus myself.

Agreed.

A new channel sounds like an excellent idea. I'll drop in when I get home.
